1st Gear issue

hey everyone,

every now and then, I notice that I cant get my car in 1st gear (while at a stop).. It feels like the shifter hits something and just wont go in.. if i bring it back into neutral, or just anywhere other than first gear, then it seems to pop into first gear without any problems... this doesnt happen too often, but it seems like the past few days its doing it a little more than it used too..

does anyone have any ideas?? My car shifts pretty good, for the most part.. every now and then it will be notchy, sometimes it shifts perfect.. I am about to put some synthetic fluid in there and see if it helps at all..

thanks a lot!

I do know how to get it into gear when It doesnt want to go, but I Just wanted to make sure that this wasn't a major issue or anything, especially since it seems to be doing it more now than it used to.. that could all be in my head, though..

thanks again for the help

I have the same issue too. I'm thinking I might call the dealership and ask about it.

Most manuals I have owned have occasionally refused to go into 1st and/or reverse without trying some of the maneuvers mentioned above. They have very high ratios, so everything really has to line up. I believe our 1st gear has a synchro, but this only works when the car or tranny is moving. That is why a little clutch-out helps, because it spins the tranny for a second. Try putting it into 1st as you come to a stop (5mph) and it should be smooth and easy. If not, you may have a problem.

hmmm, going into first gear can be a pain when the car is moving. I can usually get it in at <8 mph. Usually I don't even bother going into 1st unless I'm under 5 mph, or a dead stop. First can feel like something is hitting it, but at a dead stop I usually have no issue.

I regularly and easily shift into first from 30mph when engine braking to a stop...

You might be able to, but far as I know, it's not supposed to let you go into 1st at over 12 mph easily.

I doubled clutched from second to first at aroudn 14. This was the very highest I have ever taken it into first and it was only so I could pull away from a accord v6 who wouldnt stop tailing me. I burned him when we hit twisties

There's a recent service bulletin related to high ambient temperature operation (and it's hot all over the country at present) and in turn inability to disengage the clutch. Might be related.

I am having the same Problem with my 2004 RX-8.
I just took it to the dealer ship to get it looked at Because today it was giving me all sorts of problems today with going into gears. To get it to the dealer i had to turn off the car to put in to 1st gear but I would notice that when i started the car in gear with the clutch pressed in the car would start to move forward a little and also when i was at the stop light holding in the clutch the car still wanted to pull forward a little.
The guy at the dealer said it might be the Clutch but i don't think it is that.
He said they Mazda does not cover the clutch on warranty. But i don't think it is the clutch because the car still pulls fast and has never slipped before.
So i am going to show them this recall notice and see what they say.

Anyone know what could it be let me know.

Thanks

It sounds like your clutch is partially engaged. If that is the case, it is burning up as you sit there with the car trying to inch forward.

I believe the clutch is warranted for 12,000 miles. If it is damaged as a result of hydraulic malfunction, however, it should be covered for the whole warranty. If that happened to me, I would hire a lawyer.

Hi, i am experiencing the same problem, when i'm trying to downshift my car from 3rd gear at 2.8K rpm to 2nd gear or 1st gear, it feels like the shifter is hitting something, like you really cant move the shifter at that side of 1st and 2nd gear even you give it a force... i have to shift it to other higher gears for a second then that's the time my shifter can go to 1st or 2nd gear... why is that happening? is that really natural?

I have the same issue too!!!! I took mine to the dealer to get it looked at. But what I did first was to try to see if I could repeat the problem at home first, clutch in, first gear, clutch out and after about 3-4 tries it got stuck and wouldn't engauge. Another way I got it stuck was to hold the clutch for about 20 seconds before enguaging into first, and that too got it stuck. So, I went to the dealer and told them the problem and did it right in front of the service tech, and got the car in the door to get it looked at. I tried to take it to other dealers but they couldn't repeat the problem, so make sure you can repeat it before wasting your time. It's been in the shop since monday, they said it might be the shift fork, or the clutch, but now they are taking out the tranny and said that when that happens, usually a new tranny goes in. So... we'll see what happens!

So... it took 2 weeks, they replaced the 1st gear shift fork and the secong gear syncro and it's still doing weird things. So monday i'll get a call and get a new tranny installed!

I had the same problem, took it in to my dealer and they replaced a couple of forks and gears and now works great.

For some reason it sounds like the clutch is over all not engaging properly, could it be a throw-out bearing?????????????.............................. .
