the parts dept at rosenthal arlington (a la finishline performance on here) has an OE mazda filter cut open on display, and it is definitely built on the high quality side of the spectrum, i feel totally comfortable using it over any other aftermarket oil filters.

They used the same little black filter for the Miata, and that was a very reliable engine. I put 14 years and 150,000 miles on mine using the oem filters and engine still ran well when I sold it.

You can go with M1-110 tho. Thats the same as K&N HP-1010 filter.
I need to get some of those "bigger" filter because my Honda FIT needs them. sometimes I feel funny because My Honda FIT calls for a bigger filter than my RX-8.

I too am interested in the Purolator filters. My RX-8 gets Mazda OEM every time, but all the other cars I service are getting Purolators since people don't stock up on oil filters and generally ask me to change the oil on short notice. The auto parts stores are open much later than dealerships.
Really they make two different filters...the standard Purolator (called the Premium One or Premium Plus) and the Pure One.
Only the Pure One has the Synthetic media and the silicon rubber anti drain back valve, so that should be the only Purolater used on a Rotary powered car.
The potential issue is that this filter element is compressed into even more pleats (64) than the standard Purolater filters. This may restrict flow more than it helps relieve it, but it is hard to say for sure as the siping in the pleats are supposed to keep the pleat gaps open. It also features a spring-loaded metal bypass valve and a silicone rubber diaphragm-type anti-drainback valve, which doubles as the seal between the backplate and the cartridge. The bypass valve is located at the back of the cartridge, not at the front. The gasket is PTFE-treated for easier installation and a better seal. One other interesting thing about Purolater filters is that they use a string around the filter pleats (I am assuming for assembly purposes), that no other manufactures use.
So they are usually a cost effective solution, if you you need a cheaper filter, but not in the same ballpark as the OEM or Champion built K&N and Mobil1 filters.

I stay away from the Wix filters (Napa, Carquest, Nissan, Honda USA, Chrysler (sometimes)) as the paper elements tend to not do as good of a job as the spun or synthetic media filters and their metal to metal anti-drainback system doesn't really seal well- so it can let the oil drain back to the pan like the Frams.

I do
as small as RMAgic...nothing bad to say...
Anyway I change all my oil + filter (do not remember the english terme for this action lol) every 10.000km (+- 6214miles)

Just adds another half pint of oil to the car... but I'll get one and cut it open this weekend and post the results.

Bingo. Mazda shares many parts across their product line, which helps keep the cost down of all (common design and parts supply logistics).
The RX-8 filter is shared across several models. That is why its so small. One part number = cheaper.
I too use the K&N HP1010.
I use it because of the nitrile bypass and because my oil is considerably cleaner after 2000 miles with it instead of the OE filter.
Completely clean, in fact.
That is the only science I have for it.
I figure that if it is removing the black, it must be removing the bigger stuff too.

so those of you guys who use k&n hp1010, are you using it rather than 1008 'cuz it has more filter surface area?
i just picked up a free hp1008 as part of the oil change special from autozone. i can probably exchange it for a 1010 if there's enough of a reason to do it
