Good question - I'm actually kind of currious about this myself. I didn't get my tranny fluid changed until I had 60,000 miles on her, and I didn't notice any difference between the old stock gunk and the brand new synethic top-notch stuff...

My advice would be this regardless - if you're unsure, change it. It doesn't cost much to do, and once you do it you're set for a very long time, and you don't need to stress over if you should or shouldn't get it done anymore.

Actually, now that I think about it, how many miles did she have when you bought her? Unless you got her with real high mileage, you might be worrying over nothing.

If you have symptoms, you waited too long. You don't wait for your engine to make funny noise to change the crankcase oil, do you?

The dealership forgot to do it on my car so it didn't get done until 50K miles. The symptoms that I had were the gears being very hard to shift in very cold weather and the trans sticking in first and needing to be pulled out when the weather was very cold. In warm weather there were no symptoms.

The oil should be changed reliably every 30K miles in both the transmission and the differential. I'd just do it if I were you. The ultimate siign that it needed to be changed is if the drained fluid is shiny, which means that it has trapped metal particles in it.

That probably won't happen since the drain plugs are magnetic.

Magnetic drain plugs pick up chips, but not small particles that never come out of suspenison that lead to the shiny look. Probably won't happen? That's how my oil looked when it was drained so I think that it is possible if perhaps not probable.
