weird engine issue with 8

okay here it goes. when i drive my car to begin with, especially when it is hot in the summer time, when the engine gets to operating temp and maybe a little higher it kind of bogs a little and doesn't get the performance it normally does. the exhaust also sounds different kinda choppy and sounds really crappy. does anyone know what would cause this my catalytic converter is punched through and i also have k&n typhoon intake. i can't think of anything except maybe the ignition coils getting hot is there anything else this might be?

I agree, sounds like the coils unless some of the material in the CAT got loose and is now blocking the pathway.

anyone else think it's the coils? i have been experiencing the same thing just recently, and i was more inclined to think it's an airflow restriction, but then again this is my first rotary, so things aren't as clear as they would seem.

Welcome to the club. You just need to try and keep your engine cool.
There are many threads here and other club sites with thought and ideas. I personally don't think it is one issue in particular. I believe it is just a cooling problem and the computer has trouble figuring it out but I can't convince anybody of this.

I changed my plugs, wires & coils and still had the problem. I tool it in and they tried to convince me to de-carb for $200.00, I said no thanks.

I had the MSP16 done and added an AEM CAI and it seems to be running fine now and haven't had any loss of power to date living in 90-100 degree temps in Florida.

it's only 85 degrees here in TN. granted, it's not exactly freezing out, but i didn't think 85 would cause this. i cleared my computer's codes. and i still noticed it.

i had msp-16 done as well.

i'm gonna de carbon this weekend, tho.

You might need a new engine. One of the symptoms of a bad RX-8 engine is weak power output and roughness at higher temperatures. My 04 auto started losing power at 85 degrees and became undrivable at 95. Had a compression check and Mazda replaced my engine.

it is alot better after i replaced my spark plugs and wires. but it has almost been a year and it only happens when it is like almost a hundred. I am thinking about doing a high flow radiator. I have a CAI and it still does it. a high flow radiator all aluminum costs around three hundred. It hasn't really even close to occured this year yet but it hasn't reached 100 yet either. last year my car wouldn't even run and i had to shut it off for about five to ten minuted for it to run again wouldn't even start. i hope it doesn't happen this year. i was hoping to get an answer so i could prevent it.

Dont throw parts at it, thats not gunna fix it. It sounds like a fuel issue in some ways, I have certainly had cars do very similar in high heat...and it was fuel. I got more cooling to the intake itself, and it solved it. Since it shouldnt do it with OEM parts, check the install of your aftermarket parts. Is the car getting good fresh air to the air filter?

I had a compression check done on my car and they didn't find anything wrong or they lied to me because they didn't want to replace my engine. I personally think it has something to do with the computer and Mazda Techs are too lazy to use there brains to figure it out and rely too much on the text book answer. Besides it would cost a fortune to leave it at the dealer to try and trouble shoot it at $90+ per hour.

outside temp means almost nothing in terms of electrical equipment. probably well around 250-ish in the engine bay. Most thermostats open when engine coolant reaches 180-210degrees (depending on the thermostat). So the coolant running thru the engine and bay alone is at least 200-ish.
