Water in Tail light
Water in Tail light
After about a weeks worth of rain here in Ohio, I decided to give my 8 a bath. Before I even touched water to the car, I noticed a huge amount of condensation inside the rear passenger tail light, so much that the whole thing was nearly obscured. It's never leaked before, and all the lights inside still work fine, but it looks like hell! Is there any way to fix this?
I had a tail light assembly replaced for condesation problem under warrenty without any hassle. I just showed it to the dealer and they replaced it with a new one - no questions. Your situation is not unique, there is a discussion about it else where on the forum.
I hate dealers too... my headlights have condensation, but i've been stalling to get it replaced because i don't wanna have to swap my bumper. No way do i want the dealer to take off my aftermarket bumper.

you cant see the holes unless you are looking for them.

the bottom of your rear tailiights or the fronts? i'm assuming the rears and you drilled them from the back right?
Known issue that Mazda fixes under warranty. Check out https://www.rx8club.com/series-i-trouble-shooting-95/tail-light-water-62150/ .
warranty it. If u drill the holes you will sometimes still get moisture in ther but no pooling, and if u drill the holes, they might void the tail light warranty lol.
When i got my water in tail lights, i had like a cup full of water in them lol

My left tail light had water in it b4, it was like maybe 2 cups of water in it.
Replaced under warranty, its a known issue, no questions asked.
if you drill holes, condensation will come back one day. especially rainy days. and, you will not get any warranty cuz "you drilled the holes and no it does not going to look like its a factory defect"

If you get that far and see the gasket, be sure to click on "WATER IN REAR COMBINATION LIGHT" to see how and what to do!
If you do a search, there are many threads on this subject.

haha yea a $54 gasket, damn thats expensive, im not rebuilind a top end on e dirt bike lol. Yea Imma try the silicone approach and c how that plays out, good and bad thing is florida prolly wont rain for a few months from by the time I do it, alright anyways thanx
You will have to let the light dry out though. I removed mine, removed the connectors and rinse the housing out with filtered water (so no spots are left) and then let it sit in the sun for a few hours.
When you remove it you will see the water line on the gasket. After the light is dried out just run a bead of black RTV along the factory gasket (after you clean it up of course) and a bead along the body where the tail light goes (you will see the outline of the gasket) and it will never leak again.

+1 on removing, cleaning, drying and siliconing the hell out of it. Weird thing for me was the first couple rains after, I still got condensation so I figured it didn't work. After that, it rained a bunch here and its dry as a bone, so I consider it a success.
Mine's at the dealer getting fixed right now. They said there's an upgraded gasket kit for the lights available now. They don't replace the whole assembly any more.
Upgraded gasket my ***. They work as well as the upgraded visors. I have had two of the upgraded gaskets and finally did my own upgrade. A new gasket and black RTV would be the best solution.
i had about half the taillight of water. It was so much water that it fried my brake light. I removed it poured out the water and then used a hair dryer to dry it. Warning!!! do not use the hair dryer for a long period of time because it will melt the plastic. I drilled 3 holes at the bottom of the taillight. At first there was condensation then after a day it went away.
The dealer told me im way outta warranty , not a surprise, it was up in 07, a lil waters not all that bad..... Lame, I cant see myself getting a 54 dollar gasket for a light, maybe im crazy. What is RTV?

If you use the silicone sealant, can you still remove the tail light if necessary? I mean, using the sealant between the car's body and the gasket acts like an adhesive, no?
