I was searching for info on this Throwout bearing / Input bearing noise on the manual trans. I saw posts by MarkRX, Good Duck, lefuton, 8_wannabe and Gyro regarding the topic. I have just purchased an 8 with a July/Aug 2003 build date (VIN40110064) and have noticed this howling sound with only 300 miles on the car. Before reading your posts I would be sure (from my experience) that the Trans input bearing was bad/not lubricated. What can these members or anyone tell me about the problem? Now that you have many more miles than when the post first came out, has the noise gotten worse or have any ill effects been noticed. Thanks for some insight, enjoying the car so far. Jeff B.

Hmmm, howling noise? Not sure about that, but my tranny has made a faint but noticeable whirring/rustling noise since new (with clutch pedal up) and it hasn't gotten any worse. (at 10k mi.)

This noise (I vote for input shaft bearing) is common to many if not all RX7 transmissions, and is probably nothing to worry about.

As far as being the throwout bearing: I would think if the bearing made noise when not under load, it would make one hell of a racket when the clutch pedal is pushed down, whereas the input shaft would stop turning when the clutch pedal is pushed down.

9000 miles and 7 months on mine, same noise as the day I picked it up. I personally don't think it's a problem, and I agree with KKMmaniac that the noise should be louder when the pedal is to the floor if there was a problem. I'm not a mechanic though. I just know that the day I picked it up I parked next to a wall with the window and let out the clutch in neutral. Kinda loud trans noise. Yesterday I did the same thing with my car in the garage. Still the same noise. I'm personally not worried.

This may ease your mind

FYI

TRANMISSION GEAR ROLL-OVER NOISE
Applicable Models
Model Starting S/N Ending S/N
2004 RX8 00000000 ZZZZZZZZ

Some customers may complain of a whirring noise from the transmission while at idle N in neutral. The noise may also be described as a light rattling when the AC compressor cycles on. This noise is normal N no repairs should be made. Confirm the gear rollover noise by depressing the clutch pedal, the noise should be eliminated. Compare noise to another vehicle to verify this is a normal characteristic. 1. No repairs should be attempted on vehicles with gear rollover noise.

Concur with KKM: "a faint but noticeable whirring/rustling noise since new (with clutch pedal up)."

We need more new members like you.

It almost brought a tear to my eye when I realized you researched your concern, and found a very imformative old thread to add to. Great job......

This forum has way too many repetitive threads. The last thing we need is another new thread on the noisy tranny.

I hope this thread helped answer your question.
