These coils are CRAZY

I've never seen anything like these RX-8 coils. I went out to test them with my trusty multimeter and they raised more questions than answers. On a normal car, if you ohm out the path between the high voltage output of the coil and the engine block you would usually get something...not on these coils. I got nothing. I even went so far as to pull all 4 of the coils to test if there was a ground path, I came up with nothing, not from the mounting point, not through any of the three terminal connections, nothing. I've got more than my share of electrical knowledge but I'm completely stumped. If the voltage coming out of the coill jumps the spark gap into the outer shell, then into the engine block, where does it go from there with no apparent return path. Is it akin to some sort of tesla coil? Please someone help me out, It's bugging the hell out of me!

That's a good explanation on how to troubleshoot, but I'm looking for more of a theory of opperation. The voltage/current usually takes a path like...coil->sparkplug wire->sparkplug center terminal->spark plug outer shell->block->coil. In every other car I've had, the path from the block back to the coil is either through a ground strap, a grounded mounting point, or a waste spark system. These coils have no apparent return path. how can electrons move without a return path?

they're direct ignitor coils, and the link I gave you shows how to properly test them with a multimeter, now learn how to search n00b ...

like I said, you have much to learn

Learn how to read, douche.

I'm not worried about troubleshooting them!

I'm not worried about testing them!

I want to know where the high tesnion return path is back to the coil.

notice in the bulletin that was shown that it states that these coils have built-in power switches. terminal b is your pcm triggerfor the primary circuit and terminal c is your path to body ground. from what i read about the power switch, you wont have a return path until the secondary circuit fires.

Yes, very much like a Tesla coil.

try reading yourself, especially the part about "direct igniter coil" (also see mazdatech's post above had you chosen to read the link), then try doing some research since you obviously have no experience with what that is ...

there must be at least a dozen discussions on RX-8 coils and their function on this forum alone

and if you really want to shock me, showing some intelligence will work better than calling me a douche, lol ...

You guys are having too much fun.

They aren't just coils. If you want to find the "path to ground", you aren't going to do it with a multimeter. You need to bias the ignitor and then measure the current.

If you want to find the path to ground, unplug the plug wire, stick a screw driver in the end and hold on to the metal end, and stand barefoot in some water.
Then turn the key to start.
I'll bet it will be your feet.
