Mazda 5w30 Dexelia is a full synthetic Oil and Mazda run all test with this oil and not with dino oil!
And for a KKM57P (REW) you should always use a low ash content motoroil!
Sulfurash is what stick your seals.
Oil should no and never burn inside of your engine.
Oil whose burn don't lubricate and stick your seals and damaged your engine.
That is the truth about the dino oil myth.
Synthetik is not only poa it can be a much better non mineral oil based ester!
Dino oil need Diophosphate and this destroy your Catalysator.
Pressure resitens, higher is better.
Mineral Oil ~9000 N/qcm
Synthetic 50000~240000 N/qcm
VI higher is better!
Mineral Oil VI=95
HC-Oil VI=130
XHVI-Oil VI=150
Poly-alpa-Olelfine VI=140
Ester Oil VI=140-210

HC-, MC-, XHVI-oil are all hydrocrack synthese oil's and not synthtic oil!

First; it does state NOT to USE Synthetic Oil in Owners Manual (In 04 & 05 RX-8 Manuals)

Second; Use Synthetic Oil = VOID WARRANTY!

???? Has anyone have any ticks, sort of speak, to make less of a mess when changing the vertial oil filter in RX-8?

THANKS!
JOE

Not interested in discussing the syn oil "issue" since that has been discussed ad nauseum on this forum.

You should read the excellent DIY on changing oil and all your questions regarding that topic will be answered. As to your specific oil-filter question, drain the oil from the sump, leave the drain plug out, with a long screw driver or similar tool, punch a hole in the top of the oil filter and wait 20-30 minutes for the oil to drain into the sump. Wrap paper towels or rags around the bottom oil filter to catch any minor amount of oil that might leak out and remove the filter. Clean up any small amount of oil that the rag/paper towels may not have soaked up. (There should be no oil to speak of since the filter would have drained almost completely into the sump.) Install a new filter, replace the drain plug and refill with oil.

First; NO it does NOT state what you've stated. We've covered this over and over - go read exactly what your manual states (quote page numbers here if you like), and write here the exact text... you are wrong.

Second; wrong again. The manual states that the required motor oil is SAE 5W20, API SL spec. ANY motor oil that is 5W20 API SL meets the warranty requirements, and that includes synthetic oils that are 5W20 API SL. PERIOD - no exclusions against synthetics are specified. If you can find anything in writing that discusses warranty versus oil, please quote it here with source. (Again, you are wrong).

Gordon

First of all, if the engine oil has a spec rating, you must comply. However, it is not a MIL SPEC. This would be more specific as to MINIMUMS. When comparing dinos to syn oils, dinos are what comes out of the ground, and where it comes from, all areas of oil production are differant as are the cracking tower syphon off and additives. However, with SYNTHETICS, the base molicule is created in the lab. It is what the engineers are looking for. Example Mobile I has a differant base stock when compared to AMZOIL. So you are dealing with a differant product. Both may be excellant and compatable,as with dino. But all quality mfg's warrenty their products against failure due to poor proformance.
The bottom line is that the choice is yours. Synthetics are slicker and won't break down as readily. I for one, prefer to use a specific brand of synthetic, after break in with dino. As with aircraft turbine oils, the synthetics have graduated to higher levels as have dinos. But they appear to give a higher life time to the engines provided that they are not abused.

Kendall Synthetic Blend ?

Anybody using Kendall motor oils? Synthetic, blend or regular? I think that GT-1 looks good for use in the Renesis.

I think that for those that agree with the use of synthetics should go ahead an use them, and those that don't or aren't sure should ask there dealer/service dept. As they are the people that will service your vehicle under warranty. If your service dept tells you not to use synthetic oil, the I personally wouldn't....if you are concerned with your warranty. We have all heard warranty horror stories, and I just choose not to deal with it. I simply say, to each his own.

How in the world will the dealership know you have synthetic or non-synthetic? How will dealership know if you are using 5W20 or 5W30? Does synthetic smell different? Dealership are not omnipotent.

They will have to pay out of their own expense for an oil anlaysis to find out. I highly doubt any dealership is willing to spend money to avoid warrant work. If they do go through the trouble of doing an oil analysis just to find out what oil you use before they perform warrant work, I say find a new dealer or mechanic. Oil analysis is not their business, customer service is.

only reasoning i could guess is that since it injects oil into the apex seals, it expect the oil to burn off, since the synthetic won't burn completly, it'll go out the exhaust and could fsk up the catalytic convertor.

Dino oil is "dinosaur oil" which is nothing but normal mineral crude oil.

Synthetics burn completely and cleanly.

Lack of maintenance is more of a problem then oil choice.

Mazda's pig rich tuning and lame timing is more of an issue than oil chosen!

Guys... Guys... Guys... REMEMBER ONE THING! Mazda says NOT to use synthetic oil, so if you use it YOU WILL VOID YOUR WARRANTY!!!

Regarding owners manual stating NOT to use synthetic oil? In my '05 manual it states it more than once! I am sticking with regular oil to NOT VOID WARRANTY.

Where? My '05 manual says nothing of the sort. Can you direct me to the page number(s) in the manual where you've read this?

He doesn't mention "owners" manual, or "rx8 owners" manual.

I'll bet you are both telling the truth!

Huh? Which part of "Regarding owners manual stating NOT to use synthetic oil? In my '05 manual it states..." in Buffalojoe's post are you having trouble with?

I don't get it.

We're having trouble with the fact that the owners manual does NOT say what Buffalojoe claims. I challenged him last month to prove his statement - a simple page number with direct text quote from the manual. Silence was the result... now he's making the same BS claim again. Rotario, read the thread - the owner's manual does NOT ban or exclude synthetic oil from use. Check your own manual. No mention of synthetic, period.

Aseras, as deadrx7conv stated, synthetic oil does burn completely and cleanly - in fact, it burns more cleanly than mineral oil. That's just another myth that has no basis in fact but keeps getting repeated.

Regards,
Gordon

Hiya Gord,

That was exactly my point, although my unruly sarcasm gets in the way of comprehensible posts sometimes. :p I obviously missed Syntrix's sarcasm too, although I understand now. My bad, and my apology to Syntrix.

As you state, Gord, there is nothing in the '05 manual that says not to use synthetic. I was unaware that Buffalojoe had made this claim before and been called on it. I guess the fact that he's making the claim a second time shows that he's nothing more than a prolific liar.

Best,
Bill

No big deal

I have my dealer change my oil and filter every 3 months or 3k, costs me $30.00, takes all of 30 minutes while I have a coffee. At that price I can change my oil more frequently and whether or not it is synthetic really doesn't concern me. I use synthetic in my other car and motorcycles, but the RX8 will drink cheap crude oil, but refreshed more often than really required

Adding Oil

Just wanted some suggestions on how most are carrying their spare Quart of Oil in their 8's around... this is the first car where I am actually using the spare quart I carry in the trunk, and as such, after using it the first time, the oil bottle may leak slightly, esp. when driving around town, making turns, etc...
Hopefully this doesn't sound stupid, but just wanted to see if anyone put a special container/holder or such in their trunk to keep their spare oil and/or coolant containers still during movement.

I keep the extra quart in the passthrough container between the rear seats -- surrounded by a couple of old handtowels. No rattles; no leaks; keeps it upright and secure. In practice I've never had occasion to have to fill from the spare. I guess I haven't taken long enough trips yet . I did put on about 1000 miles recently, but that was mostly steady even driving and only took me down about 1/2 quart. So I always end up topping off at home. I've switched out the spare quart once when doing an oil change.

There was a post some time back from someone who devised a strap system in the trunk for securing an extra quart or 2.

For securing random items in the trunk, I find the Cargo Net to be a useful accessory.

Guys check out the May 2005 issue of Import Tuner. It has a good article on pg. 40 regarding regular oils and synthetic. To each his own with their decisions, but educate yourselves with what these oils do.
