stock shifter?

While my car is off and parked I've learned that i can put it into a gear without pressing the clutch. Seems very loose. Has anyone ever had this issue? will a mazdatrix or r magic lower metal shifter bushing fix this?

Um, that's normal. Every single manual transmission equipped car I've ever had does the same. If anything, reverse is the only one that might be difficult, and even then, it's not every car.

In cars with a sloppy shifter, I expect that this would tighten up the shifter itself. I have never heard anyone refer to the 8's shifter as sloppy, or run into a problem where it becomes sloppy.

My personal opinion is that the only benefit present is that it makes money for the person selling it.

Have any of those people owned an RX-8? I'd highly recommend you link up with another local 8 owner (there are several up there) who can give you a 2nd opinion on if something is actually wrong or not, before you spend money on something that may not even be related even if there is a problem.

LOL! They probably all have FWD cars with cable shifters and aren't used the the feel of one of the best direct mechanical shifters ever made. The only better shift feel is the Miata.

There are quite a few RX-8 owners on the forums that are within a short drive of you (though my definition of short may be suspect). One of them replied to this thread. More can be found in the regional section.

Your the only one who has posted, (that I have read) that does not like the 8's gearbox. I've driven lots of manuals, and the 8 is probably oe of the best gearboxes I've ever used. It probably "feels funny" because you are used to crappy gearboxes. IMO it does not get much better than the 8's. The tight patter and short throws take a bit of getting used to, but sloppy it is not. Perhaps you should get more refined friends?

Just as a rule of thumb - I would only consider your issue problematic if your transmission falls out of gear easily.

Dude. RX-8 has arguably one of the best stock shift action of any (yes - ANY) car on the planet made thus far.

Ask Jay Leno.

There's no OEM option for the shifter - it's just the shifter.

There are two aftermarket short shifters available. One by Mazdaspeed and one by Axial Flow. People with the Axial Flow shifter really seem to love it. I've been debating getting one ever since I got my 8, but I have no quibble with the stock shifter.
