spark plugs
ok so my rx8 was basically misfiring and so on the dealer called me and said i need new spark plugs and coil packs and they would install it all for like 900 dollars.... is this hard to do myself or should i take it somewhere else any ideas please help......
Coils take about 20-30 minutes and cost $130-$160, plugs take 15-20 minutes and cost ~$80-$120 (costs of each vary depending on where you can get them from, some dealers will charge WAY higher than either of these)
It is something you can do yourself, although I would recommend linking up with someone in your area that has done it if you are unsure. If you go the dealer route, make sure you ask if you are getting some KY jelly for the raping you will receive....

^+1 dealers are a ripoff for simple stuff and coils and plugs arent that hard i say cross your fingers and go ahead read the diys real good and you should be ok ... hooking up with someone is also a good idea check your regional threads!
Check the DIY section, or search for it. The coil packs are under your intake, towards the driver side of the alternator. The wires that come off of them lead down to the spark plugs, which are on the driver's side of the engine. You can see one of them easily through the front left wheel well if you turn the wheel the whole way to the right.
And REALLY make sure you read the DIYs. They are incredibly helpful. You can do this yourself, but there are a few pitfalls that can put you in a jam if you aren't paying attention. Again, I suggest linking up with someone in your area to do it. There is always someone around willing to help.

There's a current post on this page that says something about sparkplugs.com (who usually get about $80 a set) having a 15% discount.

Yeah, my local dealer tried charging me $80 per coil.
Just commenting that the price changes, and anything in that range is roughly acceptable. Cheaper is probably suspect, and more is a case of date rape.

As far as tools I think you just need some deep sockets and a wrench.
I did mine and I'm pretty clueless, I had a little bit of guidance from my friend the mustang man.
Make sure you get the correct part. Jack the car up, use some jack stands and chocks, be safe, etc. Take the left wheel off. Be cautious and don't put body parts underneath the rotor while you're working.
Follow the plug wires down to where the plugs are. Pull off the wires. I would probably label the wires or something to make sure you get them back on the right plugs. Take your old plugs out and put the new plugs in. Make sure you put the leading plugs into the leading rotor, trailing plugs into trailing rotor. Don't overtighten.
Then put your plug wires back on. I don't know how many miles you have but you might want to do new plugs, wires, and coils all at once if you're going through the trouble.
Then I think you've gotta turn the wheel all the way left, all the way right to clear the engine light.
