So I was dumb & flooded my engine. When i pulled my plugs, they were all fouled & the rear leading plug tip was broke off inside the wire.

I dont think it happened when i pulled the wire off, there was little resistance getting it off. What type of problems would this cause if it had been that way for awhile? I didnt have a CEL, no noticeable performance loss, idle rpm fluctuates but has been that way since the car was new, my MPG is about 16-18 consistently & its a 05 MT w/ 27K miles.

Just misfires and fouling.

Put new plugs in and you will be good.

 

Well, i put new plugs in & got nothing. Im guessing i flooded it good? I didnt do the deflooding steps listed in these forums cause to be honest the rotary engine intimadates me due to my lack of knowledge/experience. Anyway, its in Mazdas hands now. Anyone know if deflooding is covered by warranty?

Also, when the plugs were pulled i noticed the holes in the block looked corroded. Is that normal?

 

Mazda typically will unflood it for you since they did have a TSB on it. If yours is an '04, it might still have the old starter / battery which they will upgrade for you

 

It was all covered by warranty, even the tow. Lesson learned for me. No more cold shut downs.

I'm going to say no. If he flooded his engine for the first time, or its the first time Mazda is seeing it, and he did not mention those needing to be upgraded, Mazda deflooded it and sent it on its way. Why do free work if the owner doesnt know it can be done for free? It sucks, but thats probablly what happen.

 

No they didnt not do anything with the battery or starter. They "checked them" so they said. Is it only the 04's that need the upgrade? Mine is an 05 & havent had any issues other than this one flooding. Should I look into Mazda replacing the battery & starter for me?

 

Some early build '05's had the older battery (Panasonic) and starter.

If you have an Interstate battery you also have the newer starter.

If not, definitely get them upgraded.

This is the latest version of the TSB. The older TSB cited the starter/battery upgrade, but it is still applicable and in-warranty if you're still within your 48 month bumper to bumper period.

The battery i have doesnt have a brand name on it. It is white with a black top. Part number looks to be 75D23L-MF. Any other way to tell the difference between the Panasonic & Interstate?

 

I don't think it's either. I put that model into Google and it came up with a WellLine "Maintanence Free" Batter used for the Mazda Family. I could be wrong though.
