actually it worked better than the $100 greddy oil catch can I currently have. When I rev it, I can see the breather discharging the oil right out instead of filling up the catch can. With the DIY catch can (that cost $15 in parts from home depot), the air had no direct path out and had to go down and around, touching stuff before exiting.

but functionality be damned. I paid $100 for a catch can and I'll use it even if it's completely worthless.

funny thing happened...i have had a catch tank since last year...but when i went to clean my intake filter today i saw a little bit of engine oil in it...also when i open the piping to the throttle body i also saw some bit of engine oil too...i opened up my catch tank but couldnt find any oil in it...im confused as where would the engine oil come from?

how is your catch can setup? The line from the oil intake goes to the catch can, then from the can it goes back into the intake? If so, then the explanation would be simple.

Cool guys but does anyone have any ideas how I had so much oil in my intake? This is more than what a catch can would be able to stop. The secondary intakes were almost completely clogged and the gummed up intakes were causing them to stick and not open.

you can.... but I really don't want any oil going into my intake system since I have a turbo, then intercooler between the intake and the intake manifold.

So on the end of my catch can, I have a breather filter. You can also route it through a hose to the underside of your car.

btw, running with a breather for many months, engine bay is not oily or dirty. in fact, I dare say I have one of the cleanest engine bays out of the RX-8's I've seen in person.

So, Is this a common problem on all RX-8's? even NA ones?

I went out and took some photos of my 07, because I'm curious if they have re-designed this on more recent models. People here talk about oil ending up in their air filter, but I'm not sure how that would happen, as the vent seems to drop the vapors deep in the manifold, rather then anywhere near the air filter. I'm no mechanical genius, but some of you guys are, so here goes.

Is this different from those of you with gummed up intakes? if not, how does oil make it from the vent ports all the way up to the air filter on the other side of the engine bay?

EDITED: by the department of redundancy department.

yes Mazda have rediesigned it to solve the problem - not sure of date that was done . The tube on earlier models goes from the oil fill neck straight to the intake just after the accordian tube .

I posted a whole 2nd set of pics did anyone see them. It shows the build up much better. I'm looking for a solution to this particular problem and that's why I posted. This is a serious problem on my car so I was curious if anyone had any idea why mine is doing this. There is another thread you can talk about the catch can in...

I guess they made changes. Wonder why they did'nt tap into the exhaust instead of the intake? Emissions, I guess

I have heard about a little build up that the catch can would have helped out with but looking at the amount of carbon and oil build up I just don't know if this is the answer for me. I could be wrong. I was hoping that I would get some explanation why this is happening and to the extent that it happened in my car.

Did you get the new update installed at the dealer?

I don't know if I got the new update but I got a whole brand new intake. Just yesterday though I started feeling the lack of power and torque that I was experiencing before. Pretty sure it is the apex seals myself and that was my original estimation. I'll have to take it back to the dealer.

No problem. I'll call you. What'd you think of the pics? Pretty scary stuff. They started to tell me that it was the RP oil but I just don't see how it would cause that much build up in one year.

I could be wrong but isn't the oil injected into the rotor housing not the intake? I don't see how choice of oil can cause that.

Maybe his engine is recirculating way to much vapor. The TSB would definitely help here.

Maybe because of all the hot, high-pressure exhaust gas!!! If you plug this into your exhaust manifold, bad things will happen...

To the OP: if the drop-in filter was oiled excessively I could imagine it coating the walls of the intake with oil and then capturing tiny dust particles that get past the filter over the course of a year or so...

BTW, this is not carbon buildup per se... Carbon happens after combustion. Unless you get backfire (and a lot of it!) you wouldn't see carbon buildup in the intake... I'm sure the whole thing would blow off before you started to see carbon buildup.

I have been experiencing detonation. Not sure if it would blow back into the intake. The drop in filter wasn't oiled excessively. I did it myself and I'm very familiar with the amount needed. Even if that were the case the amount of oil I could get on the filter wouldn't make up for what we are seeing there.
