series 1 parts gurus, ABS module issue
i'm having an issue with bus communications to the ABS module, causing the instrument cluster warning lights to go a bit crazy. cleaning the connections and resetting the code in the ECU fixes the issue for a few days but it is becoming apparent that the ABS module is simply failing.
the main issue is the module itself, which is a Visteon controller built by Sumitomo electric. all the listings for the '04 models come up with a Bosch controller, not this one. BUT i just checked my own '04 which also does not have DSC and it is ALSO a Visteon controller.
basically he doesn't want to pay $1500 for a new module, just wants to buy a used replacement to get by with for a few hundred until he decides to keep or sell the car. but i'm not finding any documentation about what models this Visteon/Sumitomo is specific to, the connectors are also different between the Bosch unit and the Visteon. the visteon has a long white strap facing passenger side that swings to the front of the car, the bosch has a black pull up connector facing the passenger side of the car.
even a google search for the module gave no input into why these modules are rarer than the bosch units or their possible interchangability somehow, and nothing used. if it's somehow specific to '04 models you would think there would be a lot more available used, but that's not the case. if so everyone's listings are also incorrect, if the '04 has a different ABS module than the '05 and later.

I know they are scarce. And also, only the dealer can program them, they have to load the build data to it.
My alternator overcharged a few years back and the ABS module was one of the major things to get fried. That whole ordeal cost a few thousand to fix, thankfully I had an extended warranty that covered it.

yeah i realize the modules will have to be rematched once replaced, so it will have to go to the dealer for that since they are the only service center with the software to do it. but if he can get by for $500 versus nearly $2k i think he would be ok with that.

This is the one you're talking about. it's a bit hard to find a used one cuz it's rare to find a 8 without DSC
and it takes literately 5 minutes to program the module, did it before with my IDS

then it must be the used parts listings are incorrect, even the parts listed for non DSC fitted cars had the same bosch part #. i suppose i'll have to call around a bit to try and find someone willing to step out of their office to verify part numbers.
the factory part numbers aren't stamped on the units anywhere so it makes it a little more of a chore, just the manufacturer part/serial #s.

that's the one, let me know a time frame of when you could possibly ship it out and a price.
i don't have the IDS software so i would just send him to the dealer once it is swapped. too bad the non DSC models had these, they seem more problematic.

i doubt it's a fuse issue since the problem can manifest itself in between immediately to nearly a week or more.
