Semi tire smashed my bumper...

Or more accurately, it smashed the black plastic along the bottom of the bumper, as well as knocking off the rotary accent. By smashed, I mean it's broken almost straight down the middle and the black hooks or whatever are now below the painted are by an inch or so.

Short version of the story is a semi's tire shredded while I was driving down the interstate. The truck in front of me ran over it, sending it flying at my car somewhere around mach 5

Is this fixable, or am I stuck buying a new bumper? I can take a few pics if need be.

Thanks.

did you get the place of the truck? If so, their insurance might cover it...

I've seen some great repair jobs on bumpers but without a picture it's hard to tell you what can or cannot be fixed.

No, I saw the semi swerve a bit and had just enough time to go "huh?" before the pickup sent the tire flying at me.

Anyway, I'll take a few pics when I get home (and can get all the tape off).

That sucks man.

I had a block of wood come off the back of a truck and hit my hood and put a pig dent in it and scracthed it up (like 45 mins after I bought the car!).
The trucking company (Western Express) wouldn't pay for the repairs because I didn't get the truck/trailer number or anything. I thought about it when it happened, but I didn't have anything to write with so I didn't get it. (I was so pissed at them)

Anyway, sounds like it is just the bottom black piece, which can be replaced pretty easily, independent of the painted/main bumper cover itself. There are probably even some in the for sale section, from people who replaced it with the factory or other lip.

Good luck with it.

if it's just the bottom piece, make sure you check with Paul over at Mazmart. He might be able to get you one.
(he's a Forum vendor here)

The bumper cover is all one piece, this includes the painted area as well as the black bottom area, they are one piece. Painted this will cost about $700. The bumper cover is about $325 the rest is painting and installation.

So its just the black plastic on the front bumper where the V crest is ? if so just buy a lip or the appearance lip, and if its the brackets that are broke that hold it on the bumper then that sucks, and take the money and buy a new bumper it'll cost you around the same as repainting the original

Everytime I read a thread like this I'm tempted to post pictures of my car to make everyone feel better...

I used to care about how my car looked...

...But one day I drove over a dip in the road and smashed my front bumper.
...Then my GF curbed my rear rims.
...Then I closed the doors wrong and warped the passenger rear door.
...Then a friend of mine hit a curb trying to take a turn to fast.
...Then I found a sweetass dirt highway that perma-scratched my sides after the 5th or 6th time I drove it.
...Then I tried to kill a bug in my car, hit the windsheild with my ring and splintered the hell out of it.
...Then I scratched the **** out of my trunk trying to load my computer in when I was moving out.
...Then a rock flew off a truck and added a second splinter on the driver's side.
...Then someone egged it.

I didn't even bother to keep it garaged until it got egged in my driveway. I stopped washing the car about 5 months ago (except for after the egging). Every panel has a ding, every few inches there's paint missing, every piece of glass has some kind of scratch in it.
There is very little "Brilliant" left in the black. The muddy/scratched/cracked body along with the heavily abused windshield just screams "Mad Max." Sometimes I look at it and think "how the hell does it stay together?"

I'm sorry to hear this happened to you too. Puch96 sent me a link to your thread when he noticed you had the same incident.

Here's my damage from hitting a tire tread last Friday morning.

I am way beyond pissed. The teenage chick ahead of me never even tried to move OR GET OFF THE F'in PHONE! Had she started to slide onto the shoulder, I would have know to slow and move over.

I don't tailgate (normally). I had a car and a half distance. It just happend so fast I didn't even move.

I'll have to take some cell phone pics. (Hopefully with my hands around her neck)

So no pictures of my car if we do this thing this weekend.

[EDIT] I went out to take pictures. I guess the damage could have been worse.

> I will need a new nose and hopefully a new lower airdam. (Positive side, all my rock chips will be gone and I can clear bra.) I'll also talk the shop into filling in the Mazda emblem holes and debadging the nose. I might see what they will charge to fill in the holes in the trunk lid so I debadge it as well. (Since they will have to mix and spray paint anyway.)

> I will need a new driver's side door. (Darnut, I only have one ding on the car and it's on the pass side.)

> The sill under the door looks OK. Just grazed by the tire. But no major damage. That would be expensive work if it were crushed.

> I'll quit my whining. Now I just have to let the wife know what happened.

I have found that in situations like this, the voice recorder on my cell phone is quite handy

INCORRECT. Please don't post things like that, if you are not 100% sure of what you are saying. That does nothing, for anyone.

I had this happen last year, same scenario, driving down the interstate, big truck tread in the road, I hit it, it smashed the black plastic part, breaking it, and the plastic undertray. Both can be replaced without replacing the actual painted bumper part. Now, if you have damage to your painted bumper cover, that is a different problem, but it sounds like your black plastic air dam took the hit. Even the black vertical fins, are part of the air dam, and not the bumper.

You can order the parts from Jason at onlinemzdaparts.com, he has the best prices, and will be able to supply you with all of the clips, screws and parts that you will need, because I am sure some of them are long gone. And it never hurts to have them, and they are not expensive. Getting the new parts is easier than trying to get them used, most people don't have them.

The whole job can be done in about 2 hours, maybe less, depending on your work environment, and familiarity with taking the front of the car apart. It takes some time, but it can be done.

Just a tip regarding insurance: I just got off the phone with mine.

If the tire was stationary in the road: Then it goes against your collision. (Because you should be able to avoid it.)

If the tire was moving (because it just came off the truck or another car hit it into your lane) then it is comprehensive.

Comprehensive is the way to go as the deductable (if any) is usually low and it won't increase your rates.

Collision on the other hand will increase your rates.

This info is coming from my State Farm agent.

yep, I got the same story from my State Farm agent. For me, the tire was not from the truck in front of me, it was just hit by him, and kicked in my direction, it became stationary, but i had no where to go, it was the tire, the guardrail, or the car next to me. I chose the tire.

I just paid out of pocket, and it cost me less than my $500 deductible. But I also did all the work myself.
