I was reading that last year less then 12000 rx8 were sold and because of that they might discontinued the rx8. Not only that but they are selling the rights in the rotary engine to audi. Audi already have a prototype car.

Through the purchase of NSU, Audi has the original patents to the Wankel rotary of which Mazda bought rights to. Mazda through the years of development have many of it's own patents. Now Audi is considering using the rotary again after 50 yrs and needs Mazda's help to bring this about.
Audi is going to use it as a engine to charge the battery in a hybrid car. It isn't expected to be used as the primary power source.
