It has a much greater effect on the driver's pride than on the car. I don't see how it would hurt the engine, it's really no different than shutting off the car. The only adverse effect might be on the fuel pump and/or filter, but one time ain't gonna matter much. Let's just try not to make a habit of it (speaking from experience here, too) :D

The worst problem would be if you had a had time starting it again, and had to crank a lot. Fortunately for me, it started right up after adding some really old gas I had in a can

You should apoligize to all 8 owners that you let one set by the side of the road out of gas!lol. They should only do that in the driveway if you forget to warm them up. j/k did sweat one time drove from work to bank in cold weather, bout a quarter mile no warm up time, forgot I had in gear, radio on yep, stalled it and thought, oh crap, i'm dead. Started right up, no prob

At least I didn't leave it unattended! My wife remained in the car while my son and I set out for the nearest gas station. And to show you what a saint she is, she didn't even get mad!

Just curious, does anyone actually know how many gallons are there when the gas light goes on?

maybe around 1.5 gallons left when the light comes on. had the light come on once. filled it up, took ~14.7 gallons. that equals out to ~1.2 left over, but i did have to drive for a little bit after the light came on to get to a gas station.

Everytime the light comes on, I drive for about 10miles & fill it up but it never went up to 14 gallons. It was always in the 13 gallons range.I think the mauel saids it 's a 15.9 gallon tank or something like that.I just want to make sure.My friends Benz always has 3 gallons reserve when light is on,I'm just wondering what the actual figure it is for the Rx8.

Mine has come on also around 13 gallons used, I am thinking there is somewhere around 2.5 to 3 gallons left which should get you close to 45 extra miles depending on how hard you drive. But with this car when the light comes on I would be looking for a station not riding the light.

If I were you I'd change the fuel filter to be safe. This happened in one of my 7s and the crap that collected at the bottom of the tank got sucked into the filter. Shortly after, the car started intermittently running like crap because the filter was plugged.

I got the light once and within 20 feet filled her up. If I remember correctly, I think the 8's fuel light comes on at 13.5 gallons...which means you have 2.4 (or about 2.5) gallons left before the 8 needs feeding.

It works out too...I normally drive 250-260 miles and fill up between 13.3-14 gallons. I also avg 19+ mpg so that further indicates the above number is correct.

I routinely drive until the light comes on, with 3 gallons remaining. Done this dozens (maybe a hundred) times, and it's very predictable.
