And 5w20 is only recommended if its the special formulation MAZDA oil.

The reason for Mazda Canada and US recommending 5w20 is due to Ford's involvement in Mazda, and its cheaper for them to have one oil than a bunch of different ones. It was also an attempt to try to get badly designed ineffecient Domestic engines to get better fuel consumption by using super thin oil which inherantly causes less drag internal to the engine. They really don't care if your engine doesn't have adequate protection, and are going on the gamble that most engines will still last to the 100,000km mark before failing even with oil that is too thin. Just do your own homework and you'll quickly discover that one of the best oils to use is a 10w30 weight oil. Why not a broad range like 5w50 ? Well the wider the viscosty range the more polymers the oil has in it and that reduces the quality of the oil.
if that is true then I am so fucked

very true, and even in cold weather, that oil would thin out so much so quickly, sorry taj, but i would say to switch to 30. btw taj, i added you to my buddy list, YAY!

they use 5w20 because of Ford and stupid EPA requirements (Emission related)

they just started with the *5w20* bullshit not long ago, so lets just wait, lots of engine gonna die within the next 10 years for *no* special reason.

Im gonna stick with 5w30, maybe 5w40 later. Still has a lot of RP 5w30 left in my garage.

They say is *ok* to use 5w20, they said they *tested* it.

I think GM said they tested their *DexCool*, suppose to cool better and last longer. Look what happen to their engines ?

Here is one argument that everyone will have an opinion on. This was one of the primary questions I asked when I first purchased my 8. The Mazda dealer told me not to use synthetic and use 5-20. In our climate it did not seem to be the correct viscosity. So I asked the one person that I respected for the rotary engine (at that time), Guitar Junkie (may he rest in peace) told me to use 5-30 Royal Purple or Redline. Since that time I have never heard from any one with extensive rotary knowledge that his advise was in error.

I have mixed the viscosities.... ill admit it .. I am a bad person. the 1st 4 quarts are rp 5w20 and the rest (and top offs) is 5w30

people may ask .. why do this. well ... i dont remember ... something some one told me try when i was in rockingham with my turbo gsxr

i never looked back.

also the best way to change your oil is with an oil pump .... you can get one under 100 bucks.

1. stick straw in hole ..... turn on pump ... go drink a frosty beverage. bam! done hahaha

correct, but i dont know how much the oil pump is or where to get one, or how much oil to put in after you completely drained the oil.

Not the best of ideas but as you refill for oil pump use use, go ahead. When you change oil completely then use all the same viscosity.

I know where you live. You never get cold enough for 5-30 nor hot enough for 10-30 so realy ether one should be ok - I use 5w 30 in the desert and that may be a little to thin but for this time of year it's great.

classic overly-**** oil nitwit thread

you can mix different oil weights no problem, it will just end up with a weight range somewhere between the two that were mixed

In reality only you will know the answer as you did not give any information. What year 8, a/t or m/t, mods, if any. A quick look at the Mazda book in your glove box would give the answer.

You answered your own question.

How much did you drain ? Put the exact amount back.
