Rock chip on windshield
Rock chip on windshield
Hello,
My poor 8 got a small spec of a rock chip on the windshield the other day. The glass didn't crack. But it now has this 1mm size chip that I can feel with my fingers. I'm wondering what is the course of action to have it fixed. Bring to a shop or buy one of those DIY kit or leave it alone. Thing is... it is located right in the middle of the windshield so it will forever be on my sight!

If it's just a pit, it's not going to go anywhere. I've had one a couple of mm across for a couple of years, and it's stayed the same. It's not right in front of me, though, so I can ignore it.
Have someone at a glass shop take a look at it. Each state has a set of rules about locations and sizes of cracks. If the location makes it an issue, keep in mind that most insurance companies waive the deductable on glass repair.
If you want it fixed and don't want your insurance involved, see what the shop would charge.

i would still get it filled in. with variations in temperature, it is possible to crack. you may not be able to see it with your eye, but if there is a crack, spreading is definately a possibility.
Most cracks on the windshield are in the middle layer of the glass. You would not be able to feel the crack on the inside of the car. Usually you will feel the pit of the chip on the outside, where the debris physically hit the windshield, but the crack propagation would occur in the middle layer of the windshield where you cannot physically touch it.
If there are any cracks underneath the pit(whether you can see it or not), water vapor could get into it and freeze, causing expansion and resulting in larger cracks.

Either case, I'd probably get it fixed. I left a tiny crack on my windshield. It was very tiny and it stayed put for like 3-4 years, no change. Then all of a sudden, Winter of 2007 it started to grow rapidly. Had to get windshield replaced. Insurance handled it, but still, it would have been better to get the small thing fixed than replace the windshield. Even if it didn't cost, they had to move my stickers which made them less sticky and droopy, they had to undo the cable routing for my radar detector I had nicely tucked away. Just an easy hassel to avoid.
