Read or reset Odometer

Anyone know how to reset or mod odo counter ?. I know how to read , write flash memory but haven't tried with real car. If some one had already tried it please exchange experience. I never open my 8' . I don't know what 8' use for keep counter memory, Is it in ECU or in ODO alone ?.

Why do you want to change your odometer? You know this is not legal right?

Just drive backwards and it will go down..

im sure its not that easy, as mazda would have huge liability issues im sure if it could be reset by reprogramming. its probably hidden somewhere that only mazda could ever get to.

plus its highly highly illegal to mess around with your odometer

its a CAN module in the dash. using the wds you could "absorb" the the info into the wds and then "flash" it to a new can module if you needed to replace the dash or something like that. but just winding it back- not without some really good hardware and software.

Backwards.....

Forward or backwards, the ECU will keep track of it! Ten miles in reverse will just add ten to your total mileage.

exactly, its very difficult, and its not like Mazda has some magic box laying around that can reset it or change it...since there is no reason, legal or otherwise, for them to need to change it...i dont think they spent a dime tring to develop a way to do so.

The display is digital, the data to the display is locked deep inside the cars ECU.

I think the only real way you could change it would be like zoom44 said, reflash the 'car' with all the data from a differnt rx8 with lower miles. Its not even as simple as chaning the ECU.

They go to a lot of trouble to make sure the miles you put on said car STAY on said car!

It would be useful if a person's cluster got physically mucked up if they could transfer the information onto the new cluster.

Or if the ECU got crunched in an accident.

Or if the replacement was higher than the actually mileage on the car you are puting it into.

Get a Xilinx emulator.

That's what we use at work to program and debug flash. I'm tempted to get a wrecked ECU and open it up.

I know this is an old thread, but does anyone know if our odometer (mileage) can actually be reduce by any car dealers? Have anyone come across this issue before? (lower mileage = higher value for the dealer)... Is there a possibility that we can check? I know it is illegal but do you know if there are dealers that can actually do this easily?

Why don't you call them and ask if they want to do something illegal for a total stranger for very few dollars.

all those things would end up with a car having a salvaged title anyway.. so the value of the car would be 10 cents on the dollar... doubt many people care if the odometer was accurate at that point
