Question Programming the Display?

Is there a way to customize the headsupdisplay of the radio? I know it says "Mazda RX 8" at start, which always brings a little smile to my face.... But is there a way to change this? or maybe even add lines to it? Its probably a stupid question, dont beat me down for askin it. This girl saw the message and asked if I can change it to "Renesis - RX8" I wonder if the dealer is willing to reprogram it or if they can even do it in the first place.

I would like to know and other people have asked before but no one seems to have an answer... it would be nice - wouldn't it.... change it to anything you like

Say... how about "my place???" or "marry me?" would be useful when you have a girlfriend around.

Just a thought :D

colored cellophane

Since I bothered opening my mouth: I reckon you could go to radio shack / the internet and look for LCDs the same size / shape. If it is a standard connector and the right size, you could just plug it in and be on your way. If it's not the right connector, you might have to mod the connector. I've yet to pop that open to take a look (and I'm not an LCD expert), but I'd be willing to bet you could find a replacement for it. The RIGHT color might be a problem, but that is a different story.

Heh, you know this morning (my first morning with my new RX-8!) I noticed the little red LEDs that shines on the ignition (and over the buttons on the doors... And I realized, since I love purple, it should be trivial to fit a little blue cellophane over the LEDs and voila! Purple light. I never thought about the red radio display, but I bet that'd be pretty easy to do too... And cheap to try.

I guess I know what I'm tinkering with this weekend.

Unfortunately a red LED with a blue cover will not emit purple light. You need to ADD blue light to the red light to make it purple. Putting a blue cover over it will just remove all the colors that aren't blue. You might have some very dim blueish light coming out but you definately won't get what you're expecting - bright purple.

The other problem is even if you change that one display to another color, everything else in the car is red... from the cig lighter light, to the ignition key light.

I was wondering about that... Hrm. Well, like I said, I bet the small amount of cellophane you'd need is cheap enough to spring for a sheet to tinker with anyway.

The little convenience LEDs might be too dim to be worth bothering with... I'd be totally stoked if I could get the display to look purple.

Just replace the lights where you can. I plan on switching as many interior lights as I can get my hands on with "UV Blue" colored lights. The ignition key light is on the list, since it lights up.

I'm not really concerned with the display, though. The red is subdued. According to my friend (according to Discovery or TLC or some other channel), red lights don't make the eye dilate as much as other color lights. I don't want a bright light sitting in the corner of my eye. It'd end up irritating me. I can ignore the red.

However, if there was a button to switch the LCD color, that would be cool.

I saw pictures of "watte??" RX-8, and his display shows "Joyride". Now, he has an MP3 player, so that may be the title of the song he was playing at the time.

Here's the link to the picture:

Well I read this yesterday before I went to the dealership to have the M flash done and I asked the service guy if it were possible to reprogram it to say something else. He just kind of gave me a weird look and said that he didn't think so. So I take it that there is not a way to do it But it would be cool to see someone prove them wrong!

Actually, some dealer service rep saying "I don't think so" just makes me think it's probably fairly easy, just well beyond any dealer's technical abilities.

I don't think there is nothing new regarding this. No one's been concerned with modifying it anymore.
