Problems with transmissions?

Is it just me....or are RX-8 tansmissions junk.......i've replaced it once....and now i'm having problems again....it's tough to get in gear sometimes and i think the throw out bearing is gone because when in neutral and you let out the clutch there's an annoying spinning noise in the tranny..........don't get me wrong....maybe i don't drive it like i should.......but i don't royaly beat the s*** out of it either......i just get on it here and there......the usual driving of anyone i know and their tansmissions are fine....i was just wondering if im the only one experiencing this crap?

50k miles here no problems.... the noise you speak of is gear rollover... it is the imput shaft spinning while in neutral... normal... if you are on your second trans in 18 posts... stop using it like you are in a drag car...

or learn how to shift properly... might search for second gear problems also...

Obviously you did not search through the forum for info. Its a well known fact that the tranny makes that whirring sound when in neutral with the clutch out and its not a faulty throw out bearing. I drove my car hard and shift fast but I'm not getting any problems, the fact that the tranny shares similarities with the altezza, silvia shows that its enough to withstand the 8's power so I don't think its a piece of junk.

it's a proven fact that it's a weak transmission that can't take a lot of abuse, all the serious RX-8 race teams are well aware of the problem

So to recap:

1. You're complaining bitterly about a well-known, NORMAL transmission noise.
2. You blatantly insult one of our senior members.

On behalf of the RX-8 community, I cordially invite you to leave this forum.

+1 Seriously people get so damn pissy in these threads arguing over thigns that simply aren't all that important. Makes me lose faith in humanity.

2nd gear sucks the rest seems fine unless you are running serious power. as far as grinding/missing gears, going to a AFE short shifter from richard paul really helped the 1-2 shift for me. usued to almost always catch 2nd gear coming out of first at redline.. now it NEVER happens.

Team, are you running the OEM tranny? I'm not sure what constraints you have in your class, STU, correct?

1. I'm not complaining...i was asking about this noise that is not normal in the slightest....it never did it when i got the car
2. I did blantantly insult a "senior member" because he got just a tad to lippy for me when i just asked a question.....my appologies

On behalf of the RX-8 community, I'll be here for a little while longer.

I think if you're content running nitrous, than you just may have to be content with paying a shop to strenthen your tranny.

sorry,
the noise is still normal... and if you are slamming second that is what you get... this trans was not built for a 400ft lbs of tq....

if you are running n02 you might take some care.... i have a spare trans sitting in the garage, just in case...

and if you drive it like you stole it... dont bitch when it breaks... steal something else...

me lippy.... FNING DUH. you asked a pretentions ? and you get what you give..

So when you press the clutch in the sound goes away? When you release the clutch a whirrling sound starts that cant really hear unless you have the windows down? That is NORMAL and a characteristic of the 8.

Agreed, the stock transmission/clutch isn't equipped to take a sudden 70 wtq spike. You break it and it's no one's fault but your own.

I had a long talk the other night with the guy at AWR Racing who modifies/rebuilds the trannies for the guys at Mazda Motorsports and his own words were, "it's one of the worst excuses for a transmission I've ever seen"

The PR guys had to replace the input shaft on the factory trans to allow it to hold up to their 650+ h.p. 20B. After the 400 whp mark, the rear axles, tranny input shaft, and PPF begin breaking. I have been hearing about these tranny problems and have been cautioning others to not "bang shift" the gears. Yes, it has triple-cone synchros but that doesn't make it a race transmission. If one wants to be able to shift as quick as an automatic, there are serious mods that can be done to make that happen, but the input shaft is still going to be the weak link in the trans. I have been running mods on my car that total more than 75 h.p. over stock, launching at 7,000+ rpm's, shifting at 9,750, and various other abuses to my car. I drive my car like I stole it from a cop and I have yet to experience any of the troubles often complained about on this forum.
