Is it possible to install REVi without the box?

I ordered REVi and the duct over the weekend and I got into a discussion with someone who saw REVi and commented how the box restricts airflow.

Now, i'm not believeing him, but either way I have 3 questions to the knowledgeable:

1. Does the box restrict airflow?

2. What purpose does the box serve?

3. Could the REVi be installed without the box if I wanted to do it?

i searched and couldn't find anything on it.(maybe I didn't search hard enough)

Besides this, I can't wait to get my REVi and ram duct! Ordered it on mazdaparts and got discounts and free shipping. :D

1. no

2. protection and insulation from the engine bay, as well as being a 'resevoir' for creating a low level 'ram air' effect when driven at high speed with the Ram Air duct installed.

3. no, there are no mounting points on the air filter that allow it to mount to the car, unless you DIY some sort of bracket for it.

If you just wanted the filter and no box why not save a bunch of money and just stick a cone filter on the car? Racing beat spent alot of time and money coming up with the design. I dont know the reason for the box but if they designed the use of it I would say you need it. Plus with the ram air intake it blows the air right into the box instead of just towards the filter.

Without the box, hot air from the engine gets used for combustion. Every 10 degrees up or down is about 1 hp lost/gained, So if its around 115 in the engine bay, you do the math.

But besides that, the box does not restrict airflow.

Stick&Cone filter? K&N Typhoon? If you want one everyones been unloading theirs, im sure you could get one cheap.

FWIW: Every intake on the market can flow more air than what the engine needs. This means none of them are a restriction to airflow from the engine's point of view. Some flow more than others do but if even the worst flowing system out there can still flow more than the car needs, even it isn't a restriction. There is far more to an intake than just pure flow. There is tuning. Racing Beat spent alot of time on this. The ram air duct makes things even better when used in conjunction with the REVi intake. Racing Beat found during testing of the unit that at freeway speeds and higher they could actually get positive pressure inside the airbox! You won't see that on a stationary dyno. Whoever said the airbox is a restriction is just guessing. Air is funny stuff. You can't always tell what it does by just looking at where it flows.

any body seen a mod for the racing beat intake with ram air for a greddy turbo? The airnix intake is a P.O.S. not to mention all that hot engine air.

Yea, I sometimes save up RG input and then have to schedule time on my calendar to read and ..... understand them. for some, you need to get out your calculator -- But even then, I still don't always understand them.
