You should call the parts guy at one or more Mazda dealerships and negotiate $20 for the air filter. Just say that you've bought it before at a dealership for $20.
Partsgeek.com has the spark plugs for $17.75 each. Multiply that by 4 and you have $71.00. Regular shipping is $6.95 so that's a total of $77.95. BTW, regular shipping only took 2 days to get to me!

Hey guys!
Thanks for the info.
Apparently, I called the guy at Mazda, and he explained things to me a little better.
He told me that my compression test results were OK, and actually revealed to me my results (2006 Mazda RX8, with 20,600 miles driven).
Rotor (1) 6.8 6.7 6.7
Rotor (2) 7.1 7.1 6.9
He told me that I need to do the following:
1) fuel induction service – remove carbon buildup in engine. $191.00
2) spark plugs 328.00
3) air filter 31.00
Total= 550.00
I'm going to find a local Mazda guy near me.
But, can someone tell me if this compression result is toward the better or lower side of "OK".

Don't know anything about the compression numbers, but I'm sure others will give their input regarding that. Everything quoted is with labor, of course, AND it's still too high a quoted price!
1) decarbon foam costs $20 or less. Follow bulletin for do-it-yourself (DIY). Whether or not to decarb is still of great debate because some believe it can actually worsen compression and hasten engine death.
2) spark plugs cost less than $80 (see post #26 above). DIY. Fairly simple.
3) air filter is $20. DIY. Super simple.
Lucky you live in Los Angeles because that's where there are the most car meets. Talk to some people on this forum from LA before meeting up with them. Ask them to do all 3 procedures for you. Air filter takes 3 min. Spark plugs take 30 min max. Not sure about decarb but won't take that much time. Buy the guy a pizza and a 6-pack.
Total cost: $120 plus a pizza plus a 6-pack. Now I ask you, does that sound better than $550?

Thanks for the responses, all. looks like my dealer is marking up the plugs anywhere from 80%-120%...which is not good! i've changed plugs once before, on a straightforward I-4 engine.
Pretty sure the trailing plugs on there are factory original; with the leading plugs changed per the TSB/recall at around 8K miles.
I'll need to read up again on this whole Compression issue
during that TSB service, they did do a compression check and it was deemed ok at the time.

Not sure where you're at,but i had the same issues with hot starts. I have 61k miles and couldn't start my car after 5 mins of shutdown. I took my car to the dealership and the compression test failed.Just got my car back today and new engine

Did the plugs....no improvement! in fact it's getting worse. So, I just received my order for new coils/wires and am about to try this out...<crossing fingers>.
if the starting problems persist after the new coils are in, then I'm gonna have to go to another dealer to try and get a 2nd opinion on the compression test.
at that point that's all I can do, right?

Just a followup here, guys. I installed the new coils (thanks, MazdaSpeed Motorsports program, for the great pricing & speedy delivery!!) and *voila*, car is starting up pretty well again!! So far so good. took it for a spin, then did a shut-down-and-restart sequence...twice...no issues. Throttle response even seems to have improved a bit, and that slight hesitation I was recently getting off the line now seems alleviated.
Haven't installed the plug wires yet, as I wanted to keep the process of deduction in play. guess I will get those in later this week.

My dealer (now ex-dealer) quoted me just over $1000,00 CAN to replace Coils, Wires and Plugs....I told him to shove it up his a$$, walked out and never went back. I went to a local garage and the owner's mouthed dropped when I told him the quote!
They're criminals!!! Anyone in this forum from MTL Canada, don't go to Mazda 2-20 in Pointe-Claire.
They wanted to charge my wife (Mazda 3) over 100$ to change power steering fluid...on a car that has 35,000 KM (or 22,000 miles) on it!!! Are they stupid? Did they really think I'd fall for that???
My recommendation for every member here...unless under waranty or you have no ther choice don't bring your car into a Mazda Dealership.
They're criminals!!! Anyone in this forum from MTL Canada, don't go to Mazda 2-20 in Pointe-Claire.

this is the wire that the MazdaSpeed Motorsports estore sells when you order from their "Competition" catalog. Was a little surprised, as I would've thought that from this particular site, it would be a MazdaSpeed branded part. But the price is very reasonable, so will give it a shot (and it's made in USA, fwiw).

Cuz a lot of people still believe in "they know best."
That market alone is big enough to feed all these people.
There are good dealerships around, just very few.
