Since the engine actively squirts oil into the fuel/air mixture and uses oil injectors to cool/lubricate the apex seals... Yes, it does.
And driving harder makes it consume oil more quickly.
Best to keep a quart or two in the trunk, and check the oil at the end of filling up every full tank of gas or two. You want to give the car a few minutes for the hot oil to drain down to where it can be consistently measured. Gas stations also tend to be nice and level, which makes it easier to check the oil level consistently (vs your driveway).
And since you're new to here (not that I'm not also new), spend some time reading threads. Further, notice that there are two big sections of similar forums, one for "Series I" cars (yours), and one for "Series II" cars (09 and newer). You'll want to keep technical posts about your car in the Series 1 section so people aren't confused.

I recently met a guy with an 04 who had his engine replaced at 55k miles and he was the original owner.
My engine was replaced at 55k miles too in my 04 and I am the 3rd owner so have no idea of prior usage.
You're doing well @77k.
Are you seeing blue smoke out the back? Or just noticing the oil go down on the stick? Big difference there.
My renewed engine with 5k and autocrossed alot of runs twice/month is using about 1/4 quart every 350 miles is all. I use the second trip odometer for oil consumption after a change to keep track of it. Car is always warmed up to full temp before driving over 4k rpm speed.
