Oil Burning issues

i'm getting conflicting info. on the oil burning issue of RX-8's. Dealer says there isn't, and only thing required is standard 3,000 oil changes like any other piston engine car. Others say to refill up to a quart of oil every other gas fill up. Any confirmed data on this??
Also, has anyone had problems with cold starts or cooling down problems?? I was told that rotary engines, once turned on, have to the engine running for at least 5 minutes before shutting down, and need to cool down like 5 minutes after a long and heavy driving period before shutting down in order to cool off properly. Anyone with detailed experience on these Renesis engines, please advise. Thank you.

Ok A to q # 1. Yes the motor burns oil, how much depends on your driving style.

A to #2 Cold starts don't know myself but i live in Az. I do know there are post out here that speak of cold starting issues. Cooling down issues were really with the Rx7 Fd3S. the cooling system wasn't enough for the engine. The 8 however will run the radiator fans for as long it needs to cool the car off after being shut off.

A to #3 YES let the engine warm up to the normal op temp ( halfway on the temp guage) befor shutting off. If you don't do this the next time the engine will flood and is a PITA to get running again w/out calling for a tow to the dealership. Some people say the "M" flash took care of this but it happened to me and I have the "M" flash.

Also to most IF not all of your questions have been anwsered in the Tech section of the forum.

Here is a link for the TSB's and other useful info.

a few things....why is this in 'general automotive'

IT DOES NOT BURN OIL THAT MUCH...that info was from the RX7 and even the 7 wasn't that bad

and no it won't flood if you don't let it warm up....M flash fixed that...only way it would flood if it was under 10degrees F and it probabbly still wont

if you want to be safe just rev the engine to 3-4K RPMs and do a shutdown while reving

For goodness sakes JUST READ AROUND THE FORUM it has been discussed many times

these threads are getting stupid

/I'm pissed can't u tell?

Truemagellen,
I have witnessed 09factor's car flooding and not starting if you don't let it warm up properly before shutting it off. He lives in AZ and his car is in the garage. I doubt it got colder then 40 degrees in there...

Remember that they just updated the Flash. Everyone needs to take their RX8 back again. I'm going in Next week to get mine done again.

Thats ok. All is forgiven. I was using 91 at the time. Asfor the flash update,
It was flashed with "M" before the flash was screwed up. I'll have to read the Flash thread again .

Would a mod move this the Tech part?

Done. And no, you do NOT have to add oil after every fillup. I don't know where people get this crappy info from- guess they just think scaring potential owners is cool or something. I've found my car eats about a quart of oil every 2500 miles. I check it about once a month, and add it as necessary.

Ditto to Elara - there is no data on that, because it's BS. The owners manual says to CHECK the oil every fillup, NOT to ADD oil every other fillup. Average oil consumption seems to be 1 quart every 2000 - 3000 miles.

Regards,
Gordon

To the original writer of this post, TELL YOUR SALESMAN TO READ THE OWNER'S MANUAL!!!!!

He shouldn't be selling rotaries if he doesn't know these three things, and it is all in the manual (and common knowledge)

Sheeezz....

My 8 has about 2100 miles on her. Just added one quarter oil for the first time. So...you figure it out.
