Cosmolene. A corrosion inhibitor applied to the exhaust. Smell will go away in a few weeks.
Smells like oil....but it's not oil. You'll mainly notice it when the engine is warmed up and the car is stationary.....

When was your last oil change? If recent check oil pan plug & oil filter.
Is your oil cap or dipstick missing?
Look under your air filter for oil in the box.
Look for signs of oil cooler leaks, like oil streaks around the front wheels.
Park under some cardboard and look for drips.

The car has 12k miles on it. I tend to smell burnt oil when the car is stationary at a light, etc. I thought maybe the dealer overfilled the resevior when the oil/filter was changed 1500 miles ago but that isn't it. Pressure seems fine too at a few points north of the middle.

I've had the same problem since my first oil change done by the dealer I bought it from. They filled it to the top with SYNTHETIC. I had to drain off nearly quarts to get it to the right level. It was driven about 100 miles that way.
Overfilling it caused the plastic fill spout to crack. That was replaced by a different dealer. The car still has slight burning oil smell to it that no one can find.
My daily commute is 42 miles on a freeway with no traffic. Literally there is one Mazda Dealer at one end where I get on, and one at the other end where I get off. Niether one can find the source.
It doesn't use much oil, about a Qt every 2000 miles. I'm about to turn 7000 miles.
I'll probably deal with it a little longer before contacting Mazda. I won't let the dealer I bought the car from touch it again.
I've heard from another RX8 owner who's had there oil changed at the same dealer the same thing happened to them.

Oil smell can come from the Tranny
While we had the blue 8 in for service, the manager noted the oil smell and said that it can come from the transmission. I believe he stated that there was a vent that is problematic.

I had the same problem after an oil change and it persisted longer than I thought it should have. After a couple of trips to the dealer, who put flourescent dye in the oil to check for leaks, and let me look at it on the lift, we found no evidence of a leak. Eventually, it went away. Sometimes when they spill some, it takes a while to all burn off. As standard procedure they spray brake cleaner on the engine to get as much spillage off as possible.
Another possibility is a plastic bag may have attached itself to your exhaust system. A dry cleaner bag stuck to another car of mine in a parking lot and stunk to high heaven untill it eventually burned off.
I generally believe that a bad smell in traffic is 99% not the car you're driving. If it is, it's already too late!

I also recently had the oil changed for the second time and noticed the smell of burning oil. I checked the oil level and found that the dealer overfilled the resovoir. I raised the car and drained close to a liter of oil. The dipstick now shows about an 1/8" above the full mark.
My question is. Does overfilling a rotary damage it in any way? I drove about 150km before I drained the excess.
Is rhe smell related? Is there an overflow?
I watched the serviceman put in 3.8 liters of oil. Is this too much? If not why was it overfull?
Should you change the filter first and then drain the pan so the the air entering the motor drains the passages and then you drain it all?

well, it is a new one, and you can make that two of us.
dannobre, can you tell me more about your situation, what do you think caused it, did you have any other symptoms, and did you shell out the big cash the dealer wants for them, or is it warranty for you? a new one, if you have to buy it on your own dime is $1300 just for the MOP.
And I am...out of warranty.
I now have a leaking MOP, and a stationary 8. Mine started this past weekend, smelled oil when stopped, and after some looking found that the oil was coming from the MOP. The dealership confirmed that today. But they won't tell me why, or what could have caused it, only that it was leaking and that I need a new one. And it is NOT covered under the extended powertrain warranty. Just in case anyone wanted to know.

Mine started leaking a bit about three months ago. At first it was difficult to tell where it was coming from......
We put in some dye, and it is coming from the bottom of the MOP.
If I was out of warranty...I would check the gasket
