Question No Oil Consumption

I bought this car after talking to many people, including the dealership. Everyone said that I will need to add oil - freq depends on driving. The range I was told was from every other trip to the gas station to every 1500miles. I'm not at 8K miles and have never had to add oil - it doesn't seem to move much.

I live in MN - but this summer we've had record heat (for MN) it's been well over 90 for most of the month. I'm driving daily - pushing the car aggressive but not crazy. I don't sit and rev it to 9k regularly. But I'll walk out the gears now and again. Shouldn't I have to add oil at some point between oil changes?

You should, because your MOP is supposed to be injecting oil into your combustion mixture.

How many times have you changed your oil?

If you change your oil as freqently as I do, (2kish) you won't notice a need to add oil.
(As much)
But if you have driven more than 5k or so, and you haven't noticed a decline in the oil level, you need to have you metering pump checked.

Quickly.

I'm putting in 1/4 of a quart (.25 q) every 1000 miles.

Drinks lots less than the old wankels, but it should still drink some...

^^^ same... about quarter of a quart every 1000-1500

you should check your oil more often after about 20 minutes of driving :D

Malamore,

I have about 1,600 miles on mine, and I've checked the oil several times. The first time I added just a little just because I thought I had to. The next several times though the oil level seemed pretty much stable.

I didn't get over 4k RPM much the first 1,000 miles, and I'm still keeping it under about 7k until I get to 2,000 miles... could that have something to do with the oil consumprion?

It feels like an RPM/load factor which consumes oil. A decent day at the track can make a significant drop in oil level. Passive city driving (non-WOT) even at higher RPM's (without heavy load) doesn't seem to do much at all to consume oil.
Just keep an eye on it. I checked mine at evey fill up when it was new. After a while I got the idea this was more than needed for 'normal' driving. Daily I take my AT to the rev limiter and still no 'significan't consumption. I sure agree with scarroll; if you chage it a lot you'll never notice. Enjoy the rev limiter, that's what it's for! My goal is still to feel the fuel cutout kick in; haven't felt it yet!

None.....

I use no oil between changes (every 3k miles / 5k km) probably because I've been using 200:1 premix since day one.(250ml per 50 litre tank)

The level will actually RISE over the oil change interval.

This is not a short term thing (I'm over 25,000 miles) nor is it granny driving (you'll just have to trust me on that! )

I think the oil scraper seals must be picking up some of the oil from the rotor sides and 'reclaiming' it into the sump.(Not really surprising when you consider that over the 3,000 miles I would have used about 3 quarts of oil for premix!)

My oil analysis shows no glycol, and the flash point of the oil increases steadily over the OCI, therefore it's not gasoline contamination.

I have effectively doubled or tripled the amount of oil normally injected, which was my intent. I make sure to frequently redline, to keep my ports clear, and I'll check back with you about how the experiment goes, in about another 400,000 miles! THIS rotary is going to last a LONG time!

Thanks for the feedback. I'll keep an eye on it. I do change my oil every 3k. Maybe the next time it's in I'll have them check things out just to be safe.

I have a hard time to understand this. In the synthetic vs dino oil thread it has been discussed as nauseum that in the rotary engine the oil that is injected with the gas into the chamber has to burn and so it does. Your experience suggests that not only the oil survives the heat of the combustion, but the lubrication system is so sufficient that it collects the oil that you added to your gas and uses it for lubrication. Am I thinking correctly here?

Stealth, can you explain to me how your oil level rises between changes?
