"new" rx8, previous owner used full synthetic

Hey guys,

I just bought a 2005 RX8. The previous owner told me when I bought the car that he had used full synthetic . Does this mean I have to now stick to this oil, even though mazda and others do no recommend it on rotary engines, or can I used the recommended oil. Thanks in advance.

You can use the recommended oil. There are cautionary tales against switching to synthetic in a high mileage car, but not the other way around.

You can use either what Mazda recommends, or one of the thousands of choices that members here recommend.

You should definitely give the above thread a read, preferably in the later pages and draw your own conclusions on whether or not using synthetic in a rotary is bad.

Many people have used the higher end synthetics like Redline or Royal Purple successfully without ever blowing an engine or anything like that. I'll let you decide for yourself though.

There are also people who have used synthetics and have had their engines fail. And I've seen at least one post from someone who was going string with 150k+ on Mazda's recommended 5w20.

Not making a recommendation either way. Just want to make sure j-Shinka winds up just as confused or opinionated as the rest of us.

And you bought it even after you knew that the previous owner basically trashed the engine? That was stupid...

Hope you got a deep discount.
