New "R" flash is out
Flashes come out for all kinds of makes and models just as often as you see for the 8. Just because it's out doesn't mean it applies to your car or you need it. The flash could be for something as stupid as a hard start in -45 deg. temps. and being the pcm controls all sorts of systems on the car it makes it even more likely for constant reflashes.
I hate to rain on your parade but out of the 6 BRAND NEW cars I've owned I've never had to have an ECU reprogrammed from warranty work. Not to mention new cars that friends/family have purchased. I'm not saying that the PCM updates were major issues but they certainly couldn't have been too minor to warrant a whole new program to be distributed across the board.
When I had my car I went through every PCM update up to N, because of stupid little problems (loss of power, CEL, hard start, not to mention others I don't even remember). I'm not bashing the car, but seriously Mazda needs to get their act together with this car. I realize I'm not an example of the general population and I hope to god that more people had/have luck with their 8s than me

came off the docks with K went to L because of the fals evap test failure and M for the issues described in MSP04 so you only went 2 flash levels. thats not as many as you make it out to be
. there are only 5 flash levels in 2 vehicle model years. 3 of which were only for the first MY and resulted from the hasty port campaign. so if not for that mistake only 2 level changes in 2 MY. im not defending their mistake only trying to bring a little perspective.

But did you follow all 6 brand new cars on a forum closely as you did with your 8. Trust me I work for Ford and have to put up with the whiny Mustang owners wanting any and every tsb that doesn't apply to there car and reflashes, and by the way I've seen the Exploder come out with 3 flashes in one week.
Im going to the dealer tomorrow to get my tsb's done. I'm wondering what the R-flash will do. I purposely neglected getting the "P" because of its lack of doing major things for performance. However, seeing that the P was mostly used to correct the A/C cutoff to 7000 rpm, im assuming the R has to do with some performance issues (or at least i hope so). Well anyway, tomorrow ill ask the mechanic/technician if they even have the R flash at my dealership, and what it does. If its good, i might do it tomorrow, if not, ill wait for more info on it before i do. Anyway, any quick info about what this flash does would be great.
I work at a Toyota Dealer....we have reflashed Prius's, Corollas, Camrys, Sequoias, Tundras, 4Runners, and Highlanders.....not really for problems, just retarded customers that complain for everything.....I think most of the reflashes offer placebo effects to people....
What is the big deal? Really? If you don't want to get your car reflashed, then don't. No one is demanding that you bring your car in. Some dealers won't even do it if you ask them.
At some point, Mazda will reach a point where they have the car the way they want it, or as close as "legally" (EPA) possible. I don't know about everybody else, but I want THAT car.
For those that bought the RX8 after the revised HP numbers (238 for MT), wouldn't you be happy if 10 flashes later your car had 250?
Lastly, not to be a jerk....but if you liked the car when the way Mazda made it, then you are accepting it the way they want it to be. Why question the reason for the reflash? I can certainly understand wanting to know what it does...for those that refused the last flash about the A/C, don't you think that this flash will include the same A/C cutoff?

RotaryIT you are right, do people actually think Mazda is going to intentionally create a flash that makes the car worst, no they want this to be the best rotary car they have ever made, and by them continuously creating new flashes shows they are working to make it better for US the owners. I say keep bringing on the flashes Mazda, keep making this awesome car even BETTER.

I would apply the same caution as a savvy computer-user though, and that is, don't be an early-adopter if there's nothing big in it for you. Don't run out and get the latest flash as soon as it comes out, unless you have a definite problem that is directly addressed. Let the early adopters find whatever bugs exist (if any). Despite their best intentions, the code-writers don't always get it right.
If there's nothing earthshaking in the new version, I'd just wait until I was in for some other service. That's why I'm still on M, and I even waited a while to get that one -- which WAS a definite improvement.
