New Motor

Well ladies and gentlemen, I'm officially part of the new motor club as of this morning. Are there any stickers or jacket patches or anything? J/K. Anyway, finally was able to put my new wheels on yesterday after waiting 3 1/2 months, and was pulling out of the tire shop, hit the go button then pop-bup-bup-bup-bup-bup-nothing.

They originally diagnosed bad coils, plugs, and wires, but after changing all of them the front rotor wouldn't run. They gave me some line yesterday about letting it sit overnite with oil in the chambers. I didn't buy that so I went to the dealership this morning. I saw the coils, plugs, and wires this morning while I was there, and they were all shot. The leading plugs were new, but one was completely gone(blacked out and crusted), and the trailing were old (fronts got changed for the recall) and in bad shape. The coils were nasty. They had been arcing through the base into the plate they mount to. One of them looked like it had arced 40 times (no exaggeration). This is odd also, two of the plug wires had arc marks on them also. I wasn't able to see it all together to see where it was arcing to, but they had arced to something about halfway to the plugs. I could see why they thought that was the problem.

Anyway, that's where I stand now. I'm waiting on them to call me back with a quote and I'm looking for some other places in Houston to do a rebuild or install a new one. If anyone knows some good places let me know. I'm also thinking about some other things, so this may take a while to sort out.

And another thing. 74k miles on an '04 MT.

We know you are out of warranty or do you have it extended past the 60k? I know Mazda has covered many engines past the warranty period. Have you given it a try and talked to them? In some cases they will cover the engine and you the labor. Its worth a try, unless you have your own thousands you want to use.

I'm talking with them about that exact same thing right now. Especially since I've only had the car 3 days since the emissions recall. It was in the body shop 2 weeks for some body damage. So far they've been pretty good, but if it doesn't come through I want my other options in motion.

Just heard back from the Dealership. Mazda's picking up the new block, I'm getting the labor and bad plugs/coils, no new wires or anything else. I'm still hit for probably $1,500-$2,000, but at least it's not $5,000+.

I'm kind of "happysad" if you know what I mean.

Told you, See Mazda wants to keep its good image. We all knew the Rotary was new and different but we were curious of the technology, and excited with the high revs and smoothness of the engine all most like an Electric Motor. We are all part of its development, we knew this up front its the only one. Thanks "rx8club" for being hear to make us all get more on the same page and relax and enjoy the ZOOM-ZOOM!
