Mazda Rotary wins award
The world's only production Rotary engine has won the coveted International Engine of the Year award for Mazda, ahead of strong contenders from BMW, Honda and Mercedes-Benz. The RENESIS Rotary which powers the Mazda RX-8 - on sale here next month - was appauded for being "smooth, strong, clean and compact", Mazda itself getting a pat on the back for "its sheer bravery in pursuing the Wankel format and making it work." Is this for real?? i hear they are going to increase the dissplacement to 1.5, but 2.5-3.0 liters... OMG.... thank you rotary god... :D hahahaha

 

Even though it is rated 1.3L, it really operates like a 2.6L so that is why it was classed there. If you read the description on the site, it briefly mentions the 1.3L/2.6L/3.9L displacement interpretations. They made the right choice by classifying it as a 2.6L.

Classed as a 2.6L? That would explain why Mazda doesn't play the "high output, small displacement" card a la Honda and the s2000.

And just to be perfectly clear: the RENESIS that won the awards is the "1.3L" that will be in the RX-8 at its introduction.

i know this has been argued many times over, for which class should the rotary engine be... but since mazda says that their engine are 1.3 liter, then y others classified is as 2.6 l??

so from looking at this post, when they say 3.0 liter renesis engine, it is really 1.5 liter??

 

There are a lot of threads on RX7Club.com about displacement, and several on here as well. Read through them if you want all the details.

The short story is that the displacement method that Mazda uses to rate the rotary is not directly comparable to the method used for 4-stroke piston engines (what almost every non-rotary car has). A 1.3L rotary will breath the same amount of air (which is generally what determines output) as a 2.6L 4-stroke piston engine, when normalized against rotations of the main shaft. They both suck in 1.3L of air in one rotation of the main shaft. So, 2.6L is a more useful rating for the 1.3L rotary when comparing to 4-stroke piston engines.

A 1.5L RENESIS (as rated by Mazda) would be equivalent to a 3.0L 4-stroke piston engine.

1.3 L Rotary is just a introduction... of what mazda has planned ... rotary's will live on ... eventually it got award and everyone likes it.

I sure hope mazda will increase the dissplacement of their rotary engine in order to be more competitive in todays market. Rx8 got the style, the balance, the improved rotary engine, now what it need is performance...
