It's nice to know I'm not the only one experiencing this. Even if it is normal, it steals from the excitement of listening to the scream of the engine at these RPM's... and I'm getting sick of explaining to people that it's normal. Ah well... I get the impression I'm just going to have to live with it. Just wanted to add my name to the growing number of people hearing this sound.

the spark plugs. He inspected the converter as part of the recall, and
ratio was 19:1. As far as the noise, Mike test drove another RX-8 and also
called technical services (reference #477257) and found that this noise is
normal, as this is the noise from the coolant pipes to heater core. You may
pick up your vehicle and return the loaner up until 8:30 this evening.
I still don’t get if it’s normal why all 8’s don’t do it but whatever.
mine is not detonation.

Your case seems to be normal, I've learned the hard way, lol. I think the noise is just more pronounced in some 8s than others.

Don't Baby The RX-8
I have a Silver 2004 GT with 36,000+ miles and mods. When I got the car I drove it fast and furious up to 22,000 miles with NO Problems.
After 22,000 miles I started a busness and drove it like a baby to get better mileage. I got the better mileage and marbles in a can when accelerating with clients or up an incline. Took it to my mechanic and he reemed my butt. Had to replace the spark plugs at 24,000. He told me the way the RX-8 is designed and all the flash problems that driving it fast and furious was the best thing for the car. He said screw the gas mileage and enjoy the car and use your Crown Vic for business.
So, now I drive my 8 between 4000-6000 rpm city/fwy/canyons and no marbles just pure rotary power and the mileage isn't bad.
Take your 8's and blow the carbon and unburnt fuel off the plugs and drive them like a sports car and thar shou;d get rid of the marbles

I can see Mike Z's point. I do redline at least once per drive and usually more, but I'm often driving at 2000+ rpm since the traffic here is so heavy that using a lower gear is just wasteful. However, my marbles have been disappearing, but they reappeared after the recall when the dealer changed the sparkplugs.

From what I understand, keeping the revs up might help prevent excessive carbon buildup, and once the buildup is there, no amount of "taking it to the redline" will remove it... it's got to be scraped off from the insides with industrial tools??

God damn it, i think we shold all write a letter to MNAO addressing this.
I am takin my car to the dealer tmr for reflesh and to fix this issues, hopefully they'll get it fixed. In addition, i will print out all these conversation to let them see how many RX-8 owners are experiencing this. So c'mon on ppl step on and contribue and fight for our RX8

They have................
It's normal......... The ports opening up!
And what noise that make it's louder is fixed with the new flash by making the MOP deliver more oil.

If it's normal then why doesn't everyone else have it!!! GARRR!!!!!!!!
It really takes away from the sweet sound of the rotary, and I hate to be the suffering minority.

Ok guys and Zoom44, is this specific enough:
1 - Noise comes from the passenger side, more or less behind the gloves compartment and comes from inside the cabin. The noise is high pitched.
2 - It is possible to reproduce the noise on neutral and during any other gear above 7.000rpm (or 6.500 doesn’t matter). If i rev the engine up to 7k rpm and hold it there the noise is present all the time.
3 – The noise can be heard if the radio is turned on (quiet). It almost cannot be heard when windows open (2nd gear + 8k rpm = 100km/h)
4 - Engine performance and acceleration is not impaired by this noise in any way
5 – The engine always runs beautifully between 2k – 6k rpm
6 - I use Shell V-Power Racing fuel 100 octane (engine runs better between 2-3.5k rpm) and Mazda Dexelia Ultra oil. This sound is not knocking/detonation for 100%.
7 - The noise sometimes goes away, but still most of the time is there
8 - The dealer says no service bulletin was issued about this problem
9 - Sometimes I can hear air bubbles rushing (thru the heater core?) after starting up the engine. In my opinion in most of the RX-8 they go away but in my car they together with coolant flowing in large amounts and high speed cause the noise.
10 - You can hear the noise on those new recordings:
http://private.tessel.pl/mazda/noise/rx8noise1.mp3 (best recording between 10-30 second)
http://private.tessel.pl/mazda/noise/rx8noise2.mp3
http://private.tessel.pl/mazda/noise/rx8noise3.mp3
If you can recognize the noise on those recordings and answer “yes” to most of the above questions - than we have the same problem that hopefully will be solved one day It drives me #*!@#*@ CRAZY!!!! grrrrrrrr.....

Mike- you nailed it. Exactly what I'm experiencing. The dealers unfortunately can't get it through their heads that it's not detonation. I've brought it in 3 times so far for this, and every time it's the same thing- "make sure to use premium gas." Me: "I'm not an idiot."
The problem is the length of time it would take them to get this sorted out, coupled with the fact that I'll be driving a PT cruiser or something crappy like that in the meantime. Additionally, I don't know if my dealer CAN figure it out because they don't seem to be too familiar with the Renesis... I wonder if I can just get a new one?

Call me crazy but I guess I dont have the same prob you guys do.
Look at the first note about the SES Light. Let me quote the service tech stated:"Customer states SES light is on and Engine is making a ticking type noise." Now look at the time date and year .
You guys realy think they are going to get this **** fiured out anytime soon?

So I've been listening to my marbles that happens every once in awhile, and I've been thinking that it sounds less like marbles in a can/blender and more like sand in a can/blender. It's not a very sharp sound, rather a lot more muffled. It's almost like mild television or cellphone static. Does anyone else agree with my observation?
