Keyless Entry Programing

I have a 04 RX8, one keyless entry took a dive, I have a replacement and downloaded the instruction for reprograming. However, does anyone know if you have to reprogram the key prior to the transmitter, cause the instruction are a little confussing. Don't want to screw this up cause it's my wife's car and could cause me a beating!!!!!

Key....

I presume you're talking about the key and fob "all-in-one" flipout type?

The two procedures are not related, you can do either step first.

Ok, let me clarify this a little more. I don't have the "flip key" just the transmitter that hangs on the key ring. Looking at the instruction it talks about registering the key's. Both of the key's I have start the car will open the door. When I follow the steps to code the transmitter the new one does nothing. When I called the dealer they told me I had to bring both of the keys in for resetting and of couse hit me for $29.99. I just trying to get the new transmitter coded. HELP!!!!!!!!!!!
