Thumbs up HID's?

Hey guys this is my first post. I picked up the RX8 about two weeks ago. I’ve had so much fun driving it, now it's time for some mods. Here's the first on my to do list; changing the OEM HID bulbs? Does anyone know what the Kelvin, the color rating is for the OEM HID equipped RX8’s?

I don’t know if anyone noticed that they are rather weak for HID’s. When ever I drive the RX8 at night I can’t help but to notice that other cars that have OEM HID’s are putting out way more light. Anyone notice this? And for the record I have a 6sp with Sports and Touring packages.

Yes that is very hepful, thank you. However you didn't answer my question? What temp/color is the OEM HID rated at? ie, 4300K, 5000K, 6000K...? Thanks

Mistaken.....

Just a correction to your bulb list,
the headlight is H9, 9005 will NOT fit.
The housing mount is the same, but the wiring will not 'plug&play'.

You will never gonna get a better visibility out of higher color temperature bulbs. The OEM HID bulbs of RX8 are Philips 85122+. The color temp is 4200K with 3400 lumen output. By increasing color temperature you will lose significant light output (I believe Philips Ultinons (6000K) outputs only ~2400 lumen).
The main problem of our yellowish HID compared to S2000 seems like because of shitty projectors we have. If you shine your lights on a white wall, ie. garage door, you will know what I mean. RX8 HID produces not so great yellowish cutoff line compared to bluish rainbow cutoff line of S2000. However, ours shines pretty good on sides. Also yellowish color will fade away by the time goes (color shift). Hope this helps.

We had a 2002 Miata that had projectors and I installed an HID kit. Let me tell you those sucker would really light up the road. BMW and Audi's were the only cars that slightly produced brighter output.

A friend who has a Mazda6 with OEM projectors also put an HID kit in his car. I told him about my concern so we parked our cars side by side just to compare our HID’s. His HID’s out performed the RX8. I don’t think that the RX8 has 4300K color bulbs they appear too blueish? Are the projectors from the RX8 different from the Miata’s/Mazda6?

2004 RX8 has 4200K Philips bulbs as OEM (I confirmed them in my own eyes). I don't know RX8 shares projectors with Miata or 6. Here are some comparison shots between RX8 and S2000. They use same Philips bulbs.

RX8

S2000

See the difference?

The only way you can increase the light output (beam strength, not color. You can change color by using higher temp. bulb, but it's gonna be dimmer than OEM), I think, is retrofitting the projectors from other vehicle, ie. S2000, into RX8 headlight. It's not gonna be easy.

jnam27, thank for the pics. I only wish I had pic of the Miata and the RX8 side by side with the HID's on. I still have the HID kit from the Miata, anyone know if I change swap out bulbs without taking apart the bumper?

Dude dont even try to change out the bulbs without removing the bumper. The HID bulb is VERY delicate. This isn't a piece of crap blue halogen bulb. It's not hard to take off the bumper anyways. It'll take like 20 minutes by yourself. Then just remove the headlamp bezles. Find where you want to mount the ballasts and igniters and go to work. It should take around 2 hrs from start to finish, tops.

*edit*
Whoops didn't see you had the oem hid already, you'll still have to remove the bumper and bezles, dont worry about the ballasts and igniters. Just switch out the bulbs with some new ones, and you should be good to go.

TxRx8: I think he already has OEM HIDs on his RX8, doesn't he?

If you want to swap the Miata HID CONVERSION kit with RX8 OEM HID, its not gonna work. I don't know what kind of bulb (H4, 9006???) Miata uses, but RX8 OEM HID uses D2S bulb type.

Yeah, those S2000 projectors are awesome. Funny thing is that they are manufactured by the same company (Kioto (sp?)/Stanley) who manufactures our projectors. It's really unfair that S2000 got those great projectors while we got these shitty projectors from the same company, Isn't it?
