has anyone used CataClean for their catalyst?

Hi

As my CEL light was due to a problem with the CAT, and I need a new one, I was just wondering if anyone has ever used a product called CataClean? it keeps the catalyst clean (funny enough), and i googled it with the mazda rx8 to see if it is suitable for a rotary. I did find out that it is and has helped rx8's pass their emissions test at MOT.

Have any of you used it on your 8? As the CAT on these cars is so expensive, I am worried that it can happen again, and would like to use someting to keep my engine/CAT clean.

I have seen that some of you use a product called seafoam and the mazda foam engine zoom zoom cleaner, but it is too much for me, and don't wanna break anything etc.

This CataClean product also says it will keep the rotors/apex seal tips clean of carbon, so I would assume a better fuel combustion in a cleaner engine will result in cleaner emissions through the CAT and thus it does not get clogged up and fail?

What do you think?

the CAT is warrantied to 100k miles in the usa due to the EPA*.

check to see if your local laws are similar.

so if it develops a fault, do mazda replace it free of charge?

the mazda dealership my car got sent to, want Ł1100 for a new one, they only cover it under their 3 year warranty. i don't think they warrant it as they said it developed a fault and they had spoken with the car dealership (not mazda) i got my 8 from so i dunno the full explanation. i thought cleaning it would be cheaper, but it must not be the case, i will find out what laws we have in the UK for warranties on CATs.

CataClean doesn't seem to be sold in the US or Canada. I did find this in a UK MX5 forum.

I don't see how it can clean a t cat.

It will clean the engine by making it run leaner. It that means the CAT runs at a higher temperture and burns some gunk off.......

Thats a big stretch.

Sounds like snake oil.

yep it sounds about rite, i have found other reviews about all these engine cleaners/carbon cleaners and basically they say they would not survive the high combustion temperatures to do any cleaning of a CAT through exhaust emissions.

what is the best petrol to use, SHELL OptiMax or BP Ultimate, as they have built in cleaning ingredients and I think running my 8 on either will be enough to clean the engine and help the CAT keep in shape. I do not want it failing again as it is far too expensive and warranties do not cover them

cheers
