You are hearing intake ports rattling. The tolerances in the auxiliary ports can be loose and cause a rattle.
Detonation sounds like someone crushing a soda can near your front left tire.

What kind of mileage did you get out of your first tank Dom? Personally, the two tanks prior to my single pre-mix were running at 16.4mpg and 16.5mpg. With 6oz. of Pennzoil marine synthetic (all the local Walmart had in stock), it went up to 18.2mpg. That's like getting an extra gallon of gas in every tank! Still not as good as I was getting without premix last summer (19.1mpg avg.) though.

I'm running without again, just to see how the mileage looks, just to be sure the gain wasn't a fluke.

Ah, thanks for the clarification MM. I'd read that the intake ports could make noise, but all the posts I saw said they they kicked in at higher RPMs, and under WOT. I can hear mine all the way up from about 2.5k under ANY acceleration, at least until the engine noise/exhaust drowns them out. I'll do some more searching on the ports to see if I have anything to be worried about...thanks for the tip.

By the way...picked up the mag with your car featured...friggin sweet man. Even my wife, who HATES cars, said "WOW".

I dont keep track of my MPG on paper. I use the "A & B Trip" on the dash and I can tell right away its better now than when I first got the car about a month back.

Pre-mix adds some "insurance" that the rotor seals will be well lubricated, especially in more highly stressed tracked and turbo'd 8's.

^+1 Idemitsu is indeed the pre-mix of choice.

So basically me using Rp syntheticin my oil pan wile turbo and pre-mix sf60 in the tank would be fine correct? I might try both sf60 and Idemitsu but not at the same time to see if the is a difference in performance. Also what would be another good type of oil to try and mix other then Idemitsu something i can find more locally

If you have a local dealer - AMSOIL Saber Professional (Full Synthetic) - If not, Pennzoil Marine 2-cycle Full Synthetic is also very good an be had locally

Here's something I was thinking about the other day... I seem to remember someone (Ray?) mention looking at OMP injection rates under various conditions. What did the injection look like under decel (under fuel cut). It seems that this is the only time that the lower part of the chamber could get any lubrication (as the oil would burn up before it could lubricate anything, otherwise).

In this respect, you probably wouldn't want to disable the OMP entirely, but instead have a combination of premix and a good-quality oil through the OMP.

After reading posts until my head hurt over the winter, I decided to go ahead and premix, see what happens.

Then it hit me- to get an accurate mix ratio, you pretty much have to add it on a nearly empty tank.

My habit for the last 35 years is to fill-up at 1/2 tank. Guess I have to develop a new habit!

Went with 150:1 for the first mix. Engine has 4100 miles on it, stored for the winter but warmed-up every week or two since Nov. 30th. It's an '07 purchased BN 11 months ago.

Thanks to everyone who posted useful info on pre-mixing.

its fine to add it to a 1/2 tank .
Its easy for me because I work in litres and I know it is roughly 15 litres every 1/4 tank . I premix at roughly 200:1 so I just work out how many litres to fill and divide that number by 2 to get how much premix to add .
1/2 tank = 30L divide by 2 = 150ml

I usually err on the lower ratio side so I'm in a range of 180 - 200:1 .

You're right of course, Brettus.

I should work out a table of premix per volume fuel. I would prefer to add it before the fuel, so that it's mixed better, but I suppose that's not really critical. That would also mean that I'd either have to know in advance how much to take with me to the filling station, or have a little "kit" that I could take along in the trunk, and just measure-out to suit the amount of fuel added- and always be sure to leave room for the premix.

What a fussy little car we own, eh?

I have a plastic bottle that has two compartments. You squeeze the bottle and it meters oil into the measuring compartment - then you just pour that in from there .
works great - have a pic. but having trouble loading it right now .

How hard is it ?

if you want to premix 12 oz to an empty tank, then at 1/2 tank u premix 6oz. Find out what's ur ratio want, then just dump full dose first, just cut it in 1/2 after.

Yah, I admitted that it doesn't take a lot of brainpower, but since the gas gague isn't going to tell me precisely how much I need, I have to wait until I've already pumped the gas, then add the right amount of pre-mix. It just means that I need to take it, and a measuring cup, with me to the gas station.

I just need to do it a few times until it becomes routine.

I like to use the Marvel Mystery Oil bottle (the new ones). They have 4 ounce graduations on the side. Mostly filled with RP 2cycle oil with a little MMO added for extra cleaning. I usually add about 8 ounces per fill up. I strap the bottle in where the tire kit used to sit. Works so far.
