It does look like a coffee filter. The weird thing is that I can't believe the pump was still operating.

I started premixing yesterday after reading a few pages on this thread. I went ahead and added 12oz of Valvoline 2-Cycle Motor Oil TC-W3 with 13.45 gallons of 91 Octane. I could feel the immediate difference when I drove it for 75 miles compared with only 91 Oct. fuel. The response is quick and smooth, and the idle stayed around 800-850 RPM vice 750 RPM. One question though, did any of you encounter a CEL after initial premixing? It popped the last few miles on my way home.

FYI, the Valvoline is much stinkier than amsoil/idemitsu (I have midpipe). I just got done with a quart and probably will not use it again.
Never got a CEL, can't help you there.

You should have probably only used about half of the 12 oz.
I use .05 oz/ per gallon of gas with no problems.

You probably should stick with .5oz per gallon. 12 oz might be a bit much esp. I presume you have pre-existing OMP? I do .5 oz per gallon by the way, as do many here on the board.

1oz per gallon is fine, I have been running 1oz of Idemitsu for a while and it has not affected mileage or anything else. When I changed my plugs (do it once a year regardless of mileage) they had a nice film of oil on them

I run 1.6oz per gallon, no OMP though, race use only.

2oz per gallon shouldnt cause any problems on the race track.
do at least 1/2 oz per gallon on the street or dont bother.

That isn't normal or a result of premixing. Your plugs should be dry.
The only noticible "side-effect" of using premix is that your exhaust will turn reddish and chalky.

Well I don't want to ditch the OMP completely because it is a PIA, so if it is there I might as well have it injecting clean idemitsu instead of dirty engine oil. And premixing the gas IMO is a must on a S1 Renesis. When I pull part this motor we will see just how much doing all this really helps since I have done it since break in.

Using the SOHN gets a better lubricant in there but we are stilling missing an oil injector.

The Sohn just replaces dirty motor oil which also has antioxidants to slow down burn, to a lubricant designed to mix and burn with gas. Two cycle oil is used in motorcycle races and tested to death for deposit control.

So by premixing also, it's assured that some lube gets in the center side seal that Mazda fixed on the S2 renesis. And if the rate of flow from your computer is not optimal for the operating condition, the premix compensates.

I have always premixed, and would still do it if I had a Sohn. The Sohn just changes the quality of the oil, not the quantity.

I know exactly what a sohn does.

I just never premixed... I think I will start to. I dont want to be clogging my fuel pump or anything so I guess I need to be using a good premix.

Pre-mixing also helps assist with keeping carbon off the rotor itself; it does more than just lubricate the seals.

^ Yep. And with the Cobb we can increase the OMP rates as well. So increased OMP rates combined with clean 2 stroke is a good idea. And premixing your gas on top of that just gives you added protection. However, until we see a failed S1 Renesis pulled apart that has had all this on a regular basis from day one then we don't really know if it helps. But, history shows that premixing and the SOHN has worked in other rotaries so it should help. Plus, it's not a great comparison but the RX-8 race cars running the S1 Renesis premix so i am sure it has shown to help to some extent.

My '04 S1 engine does have an OMP; engine oil, ignition coils, wires, and spark plugs are all changed < 1,500 miles ago. In the meantime, I'll run the tank dry and not premix for the next few fill ups to see if 'that' will clear the CEL by itself. Nevertheless, the engine still responds quite quick and still averaged 16.49 mpg with the initial premix.

why don't you check to see what CEL code it is first?

i know this has been done on the RX-7 but what about hooking a 2 stroke oil tank to the OMP? if one were pump it in at a similar oil pressure and adjust the rate with the cobb AP you could eliminate any oil burning.

This would eliminate any controversy on synthetic vs dino oil for your engine and probably do a better job keeping carbon out and keeping the combustion chamber oiled.
