FYI Thread: RX-7 Leading plugs after 3000 miles...
STORY TIME!!!!!!
So 3000 miles ago I needed spark plugs. There was no arguing that fact. I needed them. How did I know you ask? Well you DO pose a good question so I shall answer it thusly, one of my leading plugs broke in half!
I developed a nasty misfire and stumblig idle. First thing is first, check the plugs! Since, at the time, the RX-8 was my only car I went to buy plugs first but as it turns out no one in my area had them in stock! Wait, that's not fair, the local O'Rileys DID have the trailing plugs in stock so I said "Yes Sir, I'll take them!". I also bought a set of leading 3rd Gen RX-7 plugs. While replacing the trailing plugs is a good idea it wouldn't exactly fix my leading plug problem and since the RX-7 ones fit just fine I figured they would do the job until they got some proper RX-8 leading plugs back in stock.
Oh and these were not the nice platinum plugs, no all they had were copper ones. Classy!
So as you do, I completely forgot about needing to get the proper plugs in there until recently when I noticed my top end walked off and left me and it wasn't starting up like the athlete it is.
So I slap myself in the head, yell "Of course!!!!" and fire up theinternet.com. I surf around looking my local store's stock and once again O'Rileys is the only retailer that has them in stock but this time they DO have leading plugs for the RX-8 in stock. "Eureka!!!!!" I exclaim, run out the castle and head straight there in the beater so I don't 'rouse any suspision as to what I'm doing. No sense in letting the neighbors on to what I'm doing. **** them!
I obtain the wonderful plugs only after the guys behind the counter open them and examine them stating they "had to see what a $24 spark plug looks like". I am trapped for a few minutes having small talk. And when I say "having small talk" I mean he is just talking..er..AT me and I grab my stuff and go.
I get back to my home, jack up the car and begin the process. Do I remove the leading or trailing plugs? The leading of course! The trailing were already the proper ones with only 3000 miles on them, wow you're slow. It's ok you'll learn..in time.
So I pull my leading plugs excited to see how they look and am immediately happy to see I made the right choice....to replace them today. I'm no stranger to rotaries(slept with a few back in college) and I've never seen plugs with this amount of wear after only 3000 miles. Apparantly the Renesis is no friend to FD plugs the silly girl.
So there you have it. Pics and a story to go with them!! Happy days.
What? Still here? Oh yes! The ending! Almost forgot. Well the new plugs fixed the powerband and starting issues. All was well. Goodnight folks and have a merry weekend.
