Question Fuel Overflowing

I've had my RX-8 about a month. Every time I've fueled it, I've mangaged to get fuel all over the side of the car. This has been at four different gas stations (three Shell, one BP).

If I've got the nozzel on max, it will shut off, but not after burping gas out the filler, and onto the side of the car.

Last time I filled, I put the nozzel on as low as possible, and it burped even more fuel than having the nozzel on max - don't even know if it would have shut off or not, was standing there and stopped it.

Is anyone else having the same problem?

Thanks!

John S.

Hm, I've had mine overflow, but that's because I tried to top it off after it stopped the first time I filled it up. This car really doesn't like that. As long as I stop at the first cutoff, it's usually fine.

Nothing but a dribble. I never top off the tank. First cut off and out.

Yeh, I gased up my 8 for the first time last week, and I had the same problem sorta. With my Blazer, after the first cutoff, I was usually able to fill it up two more cut off times. I tried it with the 8, and I was able to see the gas almost overflowing out of the tank! A little drizzled out, but I made sure to wash it up as soon as possible. I've heard that with the 8, once the gas cuts off, it is completly full and you don't need to--or want to--add extra gas.

maybe your tank ventilation hose is kinked?

supposedly accorditng to my friend, when you top off your gas... you're putting more oxygen into your tank then gas. its bad to top off ur gas tank either way.

no topping off. set the flow on low and when it's done, it's done. besides, how much of th last $.35 ends up staying in the hose for the next guy?

BTW the gasoline will strip off the wax right down to the clearcoat in a millisecond...oh and don't think it stops there...start rubbing it off (instead of dabbing) and the clearcoat? will begin erroding

So no topping off AND when you remove the nozzel from the tank always have a paper towel ready...make sure none drops on the car (especially the paint!)

I get the burped gas without trying to top it off.

When the pump shuts off, there's gas over the side of the car. Messy.

jskain, maybe your engine is running hot, causing the heat to push gas back up? I don't even know if that's plausible. I just know that with my past cars, when I've been running the engine for a long time, the gas pump would usually click prematurely, as if the tank was full when it wasn't. Just an uneducated thought.

I'm more concerned with where the damn gas cap goes. I know there's already been a thread on it from a while back, but none of the suggestions mentioned worked for me. I'll have plenty of more times to experiment, as often as I visit the gas station, so back to the drawing board for me :D

Where is your temp gauge usually when driving? After about 5-10 minutes of driving, my temp guage is already a little less than 1/2 way in between. Is this where it usually is, or is something wrong?

Temp guage is normal (just a bit below 1/2 way).

Car runs great otherwise - just getting tired of having to clean the car after getting fuel (even though it's just been 4 times).

Thanks all !

Yeah, doesn't sound normal to me, jskain. It sounds embarassing, if not hazardous! I'd get it checked out by your dealer because I don't know of anyone else who has that problem with our cars. I've noticed that the 8 doesn't allow you to fill much more past the point when the pump stops pumping, but if your tank is burping gas out before you even try to top off, then that's abnormal under ordinary conditions.

I made the mistake of trying to top off the tank the first time I filled up. I forgot what happened the first time so I did it again on tank number two. I've remembered since then, but it doesn't sound normal to not get your full tanks worth.
