Pulling with another car isn't always convenient. You may not always have someone else to help you. Pushing is another option but it's the same problem in finding someone else to help you. I'd prefer not to put the stress on the bumper anyways. I live in Houston. A hill is something that is very hard to find. Not everyone has a hill. I have no doubt that if I had a hill, I'd be at the bottom of it anyways.

You are very limited to what you can do if you don't have another car and person to help you out. You pull the plugs out, remove the fuel pump fuse and crank the engine over with the plugs out to help clean out the chamber. You clan the plugs really well and reinstall them. You stick your foot to the floor to keep the injectors off and while cranking after a few seconds take your foot off the pedal. If you are lucky it will start. If not you may have to repeat the process again. I've added a small amount of atf to the chambers to help build compression. I've tried pushing the car and jumping in and popping the clutch. This isn't easy and fails far more often than it works but I have had it work this way a few times. After tons of frustration with the above attempts, you call a friend and have them come over with a tow rope! It was easier!

 

Actually, I was being pulled by our Mazda5.

 

Here's how I deflooded my 8 for 22 mins.

1. Floor the clucth pedal and gas pedal.

2. Crank the starter for 10 secs.

3. Do step 1 and 2 for 10 times in 2 mins interval.

4. Start your car the normal way (clucth pedal on the floor).

 

well guys.... i had no luck pull starting it..... i went to about 13 mph 3 times poped it in 2nd gear all it did was bog out and smoke alittle.... so could i just replace the spark plugs? would that make it start???? or is there more to it??

you can try to replace the spark plugs,Mazda will do this if you have it towed to them.

how old is the car and how many miles? Mazda will cover a flooded engine 100%, at least they did for me. That included the towing.

Call Mazda road side and tell them you flooded it and they'll be able to tell you everything. If it gets towed expect not to have the car for at least 1 full day and you may or may not get a loaner car.

They gave me one for 1 day only.

Don't feel bad, when I did this, I tried everything to get it going other than removing the plugs, which wasn't going to happen because of where the car was.

 

You could take out the plugs. take out the fuse. and crank over the engine. the fuel will come out the spark plug holes. lightly clean plugs and reinsert. then insert the fuse and try to crank. This should work.

 

Mazda didn't cover mine a week after I bought the car, almost $600 bill, and I gave them the plugs.

 

BigBacon, she has a 2005, far past the roadside assistance and bumper to bumper warranty, and past the powertrain as well.

Sure, she can have Mazda do it, and Mazda will hand her a nice fat bill for the effort.

Keep in mind that you still haven 't addressed the reason WHY it flooded in the first place. It may be plugs, or wires, or coils, or battery, or starter, or any combination of them. If one of them is causing it to flood every time you try to start it, you aren't going to get very far in deflooding.

 

i have not i am going to try that as well when i get home today. however i cant seem to find where i need to unplug the air pump??? and i will call mazda and see what they say....

my car has 92,999 miles on it...all plugs and wires were replaced at 75,000 miles.

 

I don't think unplugging the air pump is actually needed, but the picture attached in that first post is of the air pump, and the connector is sitting there on the side facing the camera.

 

i mean the car was running very well no signs of pre-flooding what so ever..... i just moved it like 15 yards then turned it off washed it then went to move it again and it was flooded. its trying to turn over just no spark.....

 

You might want to consider replacing the coils, if you don't know when they were last done. Also, at 92,999 considering it flooded and won't push-start, you might want to get a compression check on the engine. If it fails the compression test, you should still be within the 8 year / 100,000 mile engine core warranty.

 

When you pulled it, did you leave it in gear with the engine turning over. About 15 years ago my friend and I saved a 3rd gen RX-7 that had been flooded...in flood waters. We had to drain the engine of water and clean everything out. We needed to pull start it. We pulled that car in gear with the motor turning over for almost 2 miles before it finally started. Yeah it smoked alot.

If pull starting doesn't work then you've got a problem either with your ignition system somewhere or with fuel delivery.

Well i followed the DIY deflooding link....and she started!!!

Should have done that in the frist place!

she smoked for about a min, then ran as good as new drove it for about 30 mins turned it off.
Waited about 10 mins went back out and she started right up.

Looks like i am hitting the track to celebrate!
