electronic exhaust

i've been wondering about this for a while....

on my dads 2003 porsche carrera 4 s, he ordered from the factory a "sport exhaust" which makes the car sound like a 1960's muscle car. On the porsche's setup, there is a switch that you can press on the dashboard (pic below) that you can disable the loud sound with, and make it sound like a normal porsche. To my understanding, there is a motor that disables the muffler to produce this sound. Does anyone know how this works? also, is this avalable for the RX-8, and who makes it / how much?

thanks for your help.
