just got my car dynod and the guy at the shop noticed the same thing i see on everyone elses dyno charts here, the 8 drops at around 4k 6k an 7.5k . does anyone know what this is from ? the guy explained to me that its like rolling a rock up a hill once you stop you gotta take more to get going again . im just wondering if theres a way to fix this drop off cause i would think there would be a big dif in hp. secondly my car only peaked at 173.49 hp and 127.26 torque. i noticed these numbers are low for even a stock 6 speed and i have several mods. i have a turbo exhaust, hks twin ignition system, secret weapon short ram coverted to cold air, an ground wire kit. these arent major power adders but i wasnt expectiong to see less tahn stock numbers. any suggestions ?? im heading to mazda this week but the dealership by me doesnt know **** about the 8 so lookin for advice before i go

Im guessing it's your plugs that are causing these problems. wtf, HKS made an ignition for this car? Dayum, anyway try changing the coils and the wires and see if there is a difference. Im pretty sure those are causing your problems.

Yes, the dips are normal (which I forgot to answer) but what dyno was it on? Nvm it's a dynojet. But seriously go replace your coils and plugs and those numbers should be higher...

It is the wing.

Definitely the wing.

Gets in the way of air flow.

take out your plugs and check for fouling.. that will answer a lot of questions right there and cost you zero dollars.

brown is normal, black is bad.

Re-dyno'd my car this morning after fixing the vacuum line issue:

Picked up another 2whp and 3wtq, but the car is still down ~15whp from what I was expecting.

I'll talk to my local Mazda dealership this week. My car has 2K miles left on the original factory warranty, and I'm starting to suspect that I could have a clogged cat.

Previous dyno from 2-28-09 is shown below...

My car is at the dealership this morning. Mazda apparently has a tech bulletin out covering this lack of power issue once the recall flash (MSP16) has been performed: http://www.finishlineperformance.com...14-08-1924.pdf

I'll report back about their findings...

That's the decarb procedure from last March. It would be interesting to see before & after dynos, but I doubt that will sove your problem.

Well it's the check the front cat, then the coils, then the secondary shutter valve...then de-carb bulletin. I'm hoping it's a clogged cat or stuck secondary shutter valve.

May not be able to re-dyno. I've already done 2 in less than a month and these things add up. I just want to be sure my engine is healthy and won't die on me when I'm out-of-state on a long road trip.

The Dealership checked eveything that Mazda recommended:

-Catlytic convertor flow
-Ignition coils
-Secondary shutter valve

Everything was functioning perfectly and well within spec. The Service Manager mentioned that the spark plugs might be a cause as they should be replaced every 30-35K miles. I mentioned I changed mine less than 15K miles ago. He said that's good, but they have been known to fail early in some RX-8's.

I'm going to put another set of fresh spark plugs in the car. May also consider doing the BHR ignition upgrade...

128 ft-lbs, 179 Hp (Dynojet, 4th gear pull, corrected):
  • 2004
  • 37,500 miles
  • All flashes done in a timely manner
  • Corksport Catback
  • K&N Drop-in
  • Shell 93 octane, 10% ethanol
  • Well cared for but not babied
  • Never pre-mixed
  • Cat, plugs, wires, coils replaced @ ~20k miles

I did not show the torque since it was messed up over 110 mph or so. Also, when I use the RPM scale the data cuts off at 8,000 rpm. Kind of weird.

Anyway, I'm happy with the results. I've been having some idling issues of late, but I think this shows it's a vaccum problem, not a compression problem (dyno operator even picked up on the sound of the leak).

Good to know not all of our engines are destined to loose compression prematurely.

Mine had normal compression at 50,000 miles, with 2 years of turbo (20,000 miles) under it's belt.

I think as long as it's getting enough oil to the seals, it will be just fine.

GeorgeH that's a great looking graph. The power builds nicely all the way up to the redline. Looks like you've got a strong motor.
