I have the Magnaflow Exhaust and it will pop when coming down after a high rev. Got it up to around 7k this mornin on the way home from work and it was quite noticeable when i shifted. Granted I had the windows down but you would have heard it even with them up. I thought myself it was out of the ordinary but after I got smoked by a CTS V8 and heard that exhaust pop, I knew it was normal.
I have a stock catback and a midpipe on my 8. While shifting gears, if I stomp the gas real hard while shifting at around 8k I'll get a boom instead of just a pop, it's pretty damn loud, sounds like a gun shot, I love it.
I love it when backfirering, too ! Its great ! Cant wait how it fires on with RP supercat midpipe i ordered last week. Hope i'll receive it end of this week.
Here is a vid if my backfirering 8 :-D

Unfortunately yes. It probably makes people think my rx8 is broken.
For some reason, if I keep backfiring for a minute, vehicles start to back off behind me. I'm not sure if it is bad premix smell or whatever that causes them to start keeping their distance. Guess I'll never know but it is useful to shake those people off your tail sometimes.

If it is hot enough it will combust as soon as it reaches some oxygen, like near the tailpipe. The sudden combustion causes the pop.
A catalytic converter can break down the excess hydrocarbon before it gets to the tailpipe. This only works up to a point. Early RX-8 with overly-rich fuel maps still managed to backfire, even with catalytic converter.
sorry to ressurect this post, but i cant stop myself........
i've got a custom made stainless exhaust system and an AEM induction kit, and mine backfires and pops and bangs and flames, its just **** hot, go down an unlit road at nite and give it the beans and when i shift up, it lights the entire street up, as well as waking them with the bang too haha
