I spent $3,400 on just parts, including new housings, seals, etc.

The invoice reads like this (I'm too lazy to type out part #s):

Rotor kit $1378
Gasket set $252
Gasket set $118
Oil seal front main $11
Oil seal rear main $9
Front housing $394
Rotor housing $563
Rotor housing $565 (different company, shortage in the country at the time)

Mazdatrix and Mazmart were great to deal with for the parts.

You took the turbo out right? what happened ? I forgot.

Do you think the front iron crack has something to do with the housing? cuz I know that Rx-7 S4 had this problem too --- crack at the dowel pin area --- they fixed it in S5. Dont think current Renesis has that extra reinforcement.

The how-to part is the easiest one with this engine in my opinion. The problem is transferring that knowledge into the build
I mean, putting the parts together is something a trained monkey could easily do, really.
My own concerns as a common dude are: balancing everything for precision builds. That kind of machinery is freaking expensive, you need a job to do that. Not 100% necessary but you mentioned it. Same applies for the bearings.
Then there is the clearancing part. Just as important and is mostly a matter of the right sand paper with the right tricks (side seals DO wear, right clearancing does help ).
Port mods is a pity with our engine. You either go big and bridgeport it (again, talking about machinery) or all you can do is playing a bit with the intake ports and even less with the exhaust ones.
Charles and rotarygod were so kind back in the day to help me with that. The thing is that it is not just about dremelling the ports, you need to slightly rework the intake ones for better flow. Flowbench = expensive.
Oil ducts etc are a bit easier to do imho and need no explanation other than the pics you can find around here.
All in all it can be done. Will it last? Depends on you (skills, tool bag, patience ad budget).
I started working in my balcony slowly buying the tools i needed. The first rebuild took me around 5 months to complete in my balcony and was a 400 hundred mile engine from a crashed car. Now it takes me around 10hrs the rebuild itself, the whole extraction-installation of the engine is something i can't do at the moment here.
Pay attention when you clearance the side seals, and when you clean the rotors. That carbon power sticks to your clothes. I am pale white but i remember looking kinda tanned after the first try

I'm 245.5 today at 5'10". I've had some shoulder issues recently but I'm pressing heavy on machines right now. My most impressive lift (Never used drugs) is 460 bench at 230 bodyweight. I'm aiming to weigh 220 consistent for the rest of my life (Or less). I've also been friends with the B level twin movie stars and bodybuilders 'The Barbarian Brothers', David and Peter Paul for 25 years. They are STRONG!

I'm 5.11 228 now, getting ready for the season. Never been ripped though but i have a serious shoulder injury in my curriculum... 3 surgeries.
