Coolant for RX8

Any recommendation? I believe using a good coolant will bring down the running temp of the engine. And of course hp is gain when the engine is cooler. I read an article something like 1 hp for every 1degree celcius drop. Actually thought of changing the radiator to an intercooler. Any comments?

"Redline water wetter"

The same things that cause the water to stay protected from freezing and corrosion also make the engine run hotter. Its a constant tradeoff.

The only thing better than straight, distilled water is straight, distilled water with a bottle of Redline Water Wetter.
Not a good idea if you see temps below freezing ever.

Can't say that I have seen it first hand but KD Rotary has recommended against it due to some water seal erosion Dave had seen on several engines running water wetter.

I use watter wetter with a 60/40 water/coolant mix.

works great, used it on all my familys cars past and present (Nissan Pathfinder, Chevy Corvette, Oldsmobile Aroura, Mazda MX6, Mazda 626) as well as my old cars (Mitsubishi Montero, Acura Integra, Mazda MX5) and my current RX8. Never saw any problems.

I will mention that I flush and refill the cooling system ever 12mo/15k miles.

I am interested in chaning to NTP coolant that pinapple racing sells, when its time for my next change.

Tks for all the recommendations. Personally, i wash the radiator coils with water weekly and and i can feel the difference almost instantly. Better power and millage. That gave me the idea that cooling the engine running temp does improve the car performance. Wat about coating the extractor with ceramic or an improve radiator ie a thicker one?

I'm new to this thread and new to the renesis... had a RHD fc3s with a 13b re from a cosmo a few years back - went sour and swore I would never go rotary again " bla bla bla " but im back and LOVING this car!!!!!

I would like to know.... is Mazda the ONLY place selling fl-22 ?? my coolant light goes on for a bit then goes off, temp gauge on oil never goes up though so Im not worrying 100% but....BUT. it still does bother me.

Can anyone let me know if its only mazda that sells this fl-22 I went to canadian tire and they had no such thing... he tried telling me that I can use D3306 type prestone premixed coolant but I really dont want to gamble with a car I just got yesterday...

It is worth the price to get the right coolant, if you want to help your Renesis engine last. Cheaper than replacing an overheated engine.

FL22 is just normal 50/50 (look at the MSDS sheet), don't waste your money. Just get a good Prestone 50/50 or the like.

Any coolant that does not contain ethanol, methanol, borate, silicates, or 2-ethyl hexanoic acid is suitable. Peak Global Lifetime meets these requirements. I got bored looking for current Prestone MSDS and gave up. The older ones I found all show 2EHA and/or silicates.

According to its MSDS, FL22 contains: Ethylene Glycol (107-21-1), Water (7732-18-5), Diethylene Glycol (111-46-6), Potassium Hydroxide (1310-58-3), Proprietary Inhibitors (NJTSRN 217). This is the exact same makeup as at least one iteration of Motorcraft Extended Life, which at least used to be a little cheaper.

I agree. If you're not losing coolant and the low-coolant light comes on then you probably need to replace the coolant bottle. If you ARE losing coolant and need to occasionally top it up then you need to find out, and quickly, where that coolant is going to.

The coolant isnt too bad. I picked up 3 bottles for about $6X.XX from the dealer. I'm actually going to return 1 of the bottles as i only needed 2.

That's crazy - didn't know that. Is it just a way for them to guarantee a mixture of "good" coolant? Unlike some of the ones that are known to degrade silicon hoses and the like? Or is this entirely a marketing ploy to make more money?

Yeah I mean they all have slightly different make ups but there really is no testing to determine what is better really. I seen a lot of torn apart Renesis engines here locally that ran FL22 and had mysterious gunk in them. But most times owners lie about maintenance so we really don't know how often it was changed either.

Example: 30,000 miles (probably same on coolant), Mazda Reman with FL22, failed from loss of compression.

Another example was my engine, 26,000 miles on a Mazda, was torn down when traces of coolant were found in an oil test, but it had the coolant (FL22 for the first 12k then 60/50 mix prestone straight and distilled water ) changed twice in that 26,000 miles so I was surprised to see rust.

But overall it looked pretty good compared to my buddies.

They aren't called "irons" for nothing, cast iron rusts regardless ... obviously not a big issue, some minor discoloration isn't much to be concerned with.
