clutch recall issue

Today while I was driving I was shifting into 4th when I pushed down the pedal and heard a snap sound. From then on I could push the clutch pedal down and it offered normal range of motion as well as resistance but I could not shift gears easily. I was able to shift into 3rd, but I just went home in 3rd and parked it. While parked I tried shifting it around the box and if I pushed pretty hard I could maybe get it into a gear randomly. Regardless, I looked under the steering wheel at the assembly and tried to see if it was that welding point issue that the recall was done on, but I couldnt see much. Just wanted to know your thoughts as to if you had a "Oh! your ____ went", or something =/. Gonna have to get it towed. Boo.

sounds like the bracket let go. It's relatively easy to pull out, but the dealership requires it in the car to cover it under the recall.

makes me sad. Could barely start it. Guess I should have installed that reinforcement bracket I bought sooner \

What do you mean "requires it in the car"?

He means you can't remove the bracket assembly and take it to the dealer. You will have to get your car to the dealer somehow (tow, push, etc.) in order for them to replace it with an OEM bracket at their cost.

they really should pay for the towing. But yep I gotcha. Thanks for the clarification. I guess it never occurred to me that people would take it off and bring it in.

That may not entirely be true.

If it happens to you that you can't drive it at all, give the dealer a call ahead of time and talk to the service advisor. Explain the situation, and that adding the cost of a tow just so he can see it in the car makes it troublesome. See if there is a compromise, like taking pictures of the assembly while it is in the car, then removing it and bringing it to them and getting a new one. You would do the labor yourself, but if the cost of the tow is greater than the cost of the clutch assembly savings, it's somewhat unrealistic to even bother going for the warranty at that point if they insist on bringing the car in like that.

When my cat failed, the dealer I went to was 90 min away, and I brought the cat to them in my trunk. He had the techs put it back on the car (removing the BHR midpipe in the process) to validate that it had indeed failed, then put the new one on and handed me an invoice for $0. Not precisely what is "required", however the dealer understood that my car wasn't driveable with a cat that clogged, and was reasonable about how to go about addressing it.

Some dealers will be complete a-holes though, so definitely call ahead of time, and if you have more than 1 dealer option, call each until you get someone reasonable.

So the dealership gave me a card for 3 free tows, one of which I used to bring the car in. It was the bracket, and they fixed it free of charge under the recall.

I believe they replaced it with a brand new one, seeing as they had to wait for the part.

Picked up the car, and its running good, but the pedal squeaks. Before when my pedal was going bad it squeaked, and now that it has been replaced it is squeaking again? Its the same squeak even though it has been fixed.

Do you think this is a problem? Or should I bring it back to the dealer?

I actually have the clutch pedal reinforcement bracket kit that i bought from rotaryfx but never installed because i just didnt get around to it. Maybe they would install it as a complimentary insurance?

What do you guys think? Drive it or bring it back?

Get down there (with the car parked of course) and move the pedal by hand. See what squeaks. Lubricate it.

The key bit is any flex in the assembly that isn't the spring/piston. The assembly frame shouldn't be flexing any. If it's already flexing, then it's going to start weakening till it fails again.

They probably won't install the bracket, and installing the bracket will void any remaining warranty on the pedal assembly (modification to it). But, the bracket is designed to take the force that the frame currently does, so it's viable.
