Oh yea, What should I be looking for when I check the cat?

also, was there a recall or something on the cat's? I thought I saw something in a service bulletin or something...

Well....

We finally got a chance to check the spark plugs yesterday...

They were pretty gunky and chunky and black. Not horrible but not great...

ALSO, as I was removing one I felt a little slice on my finger....

I pull the plug out and look.... The ceramic insluator was SPLIT IN HALF!! two HUGE cracks on each side both running the length of the ceramic. (no pics right now but soon)

I don't know how the hell that happened. Needless to say we went to the auto store and grabbed a new trailing plug and it runs much better now!

Still takes a bit to start but much better power in the low range RPM's.

(We should really get all new plugs, but she just lost her job over some BS.. so... We'll have to see)

where did you purchase the plugs from?
I know there are some places you can go for pretty cheap

Also, mazmart has a good deal.

As soon as you can, I'd recommend changing all plugs and coils at the same time

We just grabbed one from the only place that was open, Orileys (like autozone etc..)

it was like $23.

And yea I told her we should get all new stuff but money will be short until she finds a new job.

She might be posting it for sale :-/

haha, yea she has been working at this one place for a while, got a job offer for a much better place so she put her 2 weeks notice in, then at the end of her first day and the new job they called her after she left and was like, "its not going to work out..."

so she got royally screwed over and has no job now.

so ANYWAYS in the interest of my car, we put a new plug in because one was cracked, seemed better, ran better, no light, 100 miles later
BAAM
fml comes back on,
just ran the codes same.
the dealership told me it was bank 1 sensor 2 oxygen sensor, but ive determined from the past they dont know **** about rotaries,
so what IM wondering is how can i/we check the o2 sensor ourselves?
and how can i check the cat myself, ive read alot about loss of power and the cat actually melting,
how possible and detectable is this?
i know it could use 3 new spark plugs, but thats another 70$ and i really need to find a way to narrow and pinpoint the issue before putting more in it.
its not too great on gas about 16 mpg, is that normal? or would burning too rich cause lower gas mileage,
anything helps,
thanks guys!

order ALL 4 plugs and coils at the same time. It will save you hassle later on...

Check the cat by pulling down the front and visually inspect with a flashlight.

As for the code, and how to trouble shoot, click this

shelbycobra & supermario680,
a plugged or restricted cat will sometimes make a whistling,or hissing sound. This can be heard coming from the exhaust at the back of the car. Also on occasion, as pressure builds in front of the restriction,(inlet side of the cat), the amount of exhaust gas to exit
the tail pipes will not increase in relation to the increase in loaded engine RPMs. If the engine is packed with exhaust gases, it cant intake fresh air to burn, causing a drop off of power. (good test.. a uphill grade, nothing extreme, pick a RPM setting ( in the power band for your engine,) and a speed . If you have to push gradually on the gas to hold steady speed, down shift and repeat. power drop off =restriction.
Note: as exhaust backs up in the system, you will also hear a tone change in the intake,.
What I have been using to monitor the computer data stream on my 04 is called CRecorder.(Snap shots attached)
. I don’t know how it compares to what others from the forum are using but it is well worth getting something similar. I t will pay for itself in a heartbeat., it is like a digital camera, USB cable, down load, access the picture. Perfect for me ,one who is the master of the hunt N pick.

Well we put in new plugs, runs much better IMO but still starts a little rough.

Haven't cleared the codes yet so we'll do that and see if the cel comes back.

Tried the 20 brake stomp and the hold the odometer button reset but the CEL is still there :-/

Guess we'll just go to the auto store and see what happens!
