I have a 2006 RX8 with 20,000 miles and just noticed that the catalytic converter (i'm assuming thats it) is really smelling a lot.

Is this common? And if so, why at 20,000 miles?

 

Ur cat is cooked and yes its common.

Catalytic converters are required by law to be under warranty for either 80,000 miles or 100,000 miles... either way, they have to replace it for free.

2006 hum? You done ign coils yet? If yours are stock you might consider putting the revision B or one of the aftermarket ign.

 

Get the cat covered by the dealership then go shop for a aftermarket midpipe

 

No don't a get a Midpipe as the smell is the same.
It is ileagal and anyone can tell easily that you don't have a cat.

Your car can be towed on the spot.

 

That depends on location... I guarantee you it's a much bigger problem in cali than here in texas.

 

i Thought you couldnt use a midpipe with the stock CAT? I wrote BHR asking about using my B&B exhaust ans stock cat with their BHR midpipe and they said I couldnt.

The BHR midpipe replaces the factory cat pipe. So you can not have both under your car.

 

is your midpipe with resonator and davesport cat on a B&B exhaust going to be louder than the B&B exhaust with stock Cat. I swore I posted this to you in this thread but dont see it. Also my car is backfiring when I get on it and let off the gas quickly, what is causing that?

 

lol your dead cat is causing that, seems like its acting as a midpipe.

A mid pipe and catalytic converter can not be in at the same time, i actually just put my single res in. Its much louder but sounds amazing, only problem is that it throws a CEL for the O2 sensor and it smells if you have the windows open. Worth it IMO.

 

It's going to be REALLY LOUD...stock cat is the most quiet.
Backfire? Do you mean the pooping sound from exhaust? B&B does that.
I would not recommend any midpipe with B&B, unless you like getting noise violation tickets...I'm sure you'll have more if you get pull over with midpipe on...

Yes, But it is a really load pop sometimes, not quite as loud as a gunshot.

 

Have you heard our midpipe on a BB exhaust? No. Then how can you make that assumption.

 

oh, by the way, what you are saying is you dont think the B&B exhaust with the resonated midpipe and Davesport cat would be quiter than my stock cat with the B&B exhaust? Right now, Alot of people think I am trying to race them because I am stepping on the gas and it sounds loud. I hate that but do love the B & B. In everyones opinion, what do you think is the best aftermarket exhaust performance wise and not any louder than the B&B.
Sorry for going off subject, but this is eating me up inside.

 

All I know is that the BHR resonated midpipe (no cat) made my Mazdaspeed catback a lot quieter than the straight midpipe I had. Addition of a cat will also decrease decibel output in theory.

Is it quieter than the stock midpipe? No. But it will make a nice deep tone. And remove the raspy sound.

 

 

With all the respect, here is where my assumption comes from.

I've seen footage of B&B exhaust with aftermarket midpip or with stock midpipe. And other aftermarket catback with stock or not, as well as the BHR midpipe footage. After hearing different combinations, you get an idea how sounds work out in exhaust. Since midpipe section is the first stage of noise regulator, it'll effect how catback sounds.

Stock midpipe is there to keep government regulations, mainly noise and emission, which also contribute to power loss from core. In order for aftermarket midpipe to gain(maintain) hp, those regulation parts will have to go and thus result in louder noise.

Yes, my assumption could be wrong. Since i've never heard it in person.

See if the dealer will let you keep your fried cat too. Never know when you'll need a midpipe.

 

It may be the fact that he used ARCO gas!
