Thanks MM you are the man on this. I had all 4 coils go bad without any obvious symptoms during normal driving. it wasnt until the dyno did the "problems" surface. if mine go bad again i would like to bullet proof it like this. I hope team has some success in getting better coils for the stock system for us na guys. think it may help with plug life a little also.

Greetings Charles--been a long time
No the dyno didnt cause this. Several of us Ga boys have had problems with the coils. Just my luck I was the only one that had all 4 go bad. Warrenty did cover it. I wanted to keep one for dissection but they would not let me.
Problem was in everyday driving you really couldnt tell that the things where not up to par. it wasn't until the dyno, when you see a lot of "jaggered" lines and a reduction in power after 7.2K that you start wondering "what the heck". Then you work the problem, eliminate bad plugs etc etc , then pull the coils --and there you see it! Car ran hell of a lot better after the coils were replaced!
On the dyno we had, we did have big fans. No one's cars had any heating problems (except Charlies with that single walled header he has!). The 8 does take a while to get to redline on the dyno so heat was a thing we were trying to circumvent. AMbient temp that day was in the 60's.
Now internal heat in the coils themselves we think is the problem. But it wasnt the dyno that caused it. Some guys were already c/oing of lost of power and for all of us who had bad plugs/and coils, it showed on the very 1st dyno run.
I dont think the coils can really perform for a long period of time like they need too. I hope I am wrong. Time will tell.

Manufacturers, especially these days, are prone to cutting corners somewhere. I guess our ignition systems are where Mazda did theirs. Have you read MM's thread about the AEM CDI system with MSD coils? Rather informative. I'll probably do that myself after the nitrous hardware and E-Manage are done. Just 'cause I'm not driving doesn't mean the project will stop!

in detail, as this may be a route(expensive one) to take if the coils go bad again(so far so good). i really am hoping someone will be able to get an aftermarket coil with the stock ignition system to work on our car.

What does all think about elavating the coils off the mounting plate? Put a little more airflow around them. Low cost/effort thing and even though I dont think radient heat is all the problem, it may be worth a shot.

Are there are any 2005 models in the failed coil club?

I was wondering if perhaps I could escape this failure...?

Or if I should make plans now to follow MMs path (or which ever way looks best, but I like MMs idea).

hey teamrx8.........since u wanted to try n conform the aftermarket coils to the connector to make it plug n play......couldnt u take some coils that r all toasted......im sure someone here on the forum has it, n considering u have a diagram on how the coils r setup.........pretty much hack where the connector is on the bad coil......n i wouldnt say solder........however modify the aftermarket coil for the connector to be attached to the coil....n then run that connector to the one uve been tryin too.........n problem solved???

Hey Team what ever happened with this project?

I know there is a kit out by Petit but is there some kind of DIY? Maybe relocating to the frame bar underneath where the airbox sits?!?!.

nice topic. i think any plans for my coil relocation mods may be trashed as i gotten the air box "under plate" and made multiple drill holes on it and kept it on the car. i did this seeing that the only way for the hot air to escape from the fan was drawn from the radiator and blown directly to engine where the coils also sits. wishful thinking hopes the hot air may rise from the drilled holes and stay on top in the engine bayand hopefully making its way out the via the side vents... at least during idle without any forced air coming in.
