Am I suppose to be burning so much oil?

yo fellow rx8'ers, quick question. I've had my car for almost a year now with 15k miles and it just seems that it burns way more oil then it suppose to. I usually drive it a little hard everyday, but I wouldn't see how I have an oil light at each 4k interval. Let me know if this problem is normal guys.

If you're topping off the oil every couple of fill-ups it seems excessive. If you're not topping off read the manual!

Before the bashers get to you, I'll give you the answer.

Yes it is normal. The Rensis engine uses oil to lubricate the seals. You should be checking your oil at least every other fill-up. I find that I am putting in a half a quart every 500 miles or so. So going 4,000 miles without checking the oil will result in the low oil light coming on.

But, the manual clearly discusses this and it has been discussed endlessly here so using the search command would have easily answered your question.

How much is too much? Give us something to work with. A quart in 3K miles seems to be about average. Depending on your driving style it could be more or less. A low-oil light at 4K miles if you haven't added any oil to that point is pretty much normal.

one quart per 3000 miles is where I am at too. But word to the wise - if your car low oil light is coming on, you're not checking your oil properly. You shouldn't let it get to that point.

when i drove very conservative, i never had to add extra oil. although my oil changers are always at 2500 miles. past two oil changes, i've also added in a quart because i've been driving it pretty hard now.

remember, rotaries burn oil anyways. the harder you drive, the more it burns.

and when you get the new recall flash, you're going to burn more oil even when you're not driving hard.
